Kindergarten / 1st Grade Teacher

Bethany Lutheran Preschool | Alexandria, VA
Starting 2026–2027 School Year

Bethany Lutheran Preschool, a Christ-centered school serving children from 18 months through 1st grade, is seeking a passionate, faith-filled Kindergarten / 1st Grade Teacher to join our growing elementary program. This position supports our expanding early elementary offerings and plays a key role in building strong academic and spiritual foundations for our students.
Purpose of the Position:
  • To teach the Word of God faithfully while delivering rigorous, developmentally appropriate academic instruction.
  • To implement the Abeka curriculum with excellence and integrity.
  • To partner with the Director and Academic Principal in cultivating a joyful, Christ-centered learning environment.
  • To help grow and strengthen Bethany’s early elementary program.
Academic & Professional Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, or related field.
  • Virginia Professional Educator License (or actively pursuing licensure).
  • Strong Christian faith and commitment to serving as a positive Christian role model.
  • Experience with or strong familiarity with the Abeka curriculum.
  • Classroom teaching experience preferred.
Instructional Program Overview:
The Kindergarten / 1st Grade Teacher will deliver instruction using the Abeka curriculum, including:
  • Phonics & Reading.
  • Language Arts & Grammar.
  • Handwriting.
  • Mathematics.
  • Science.
  • History / Social Studies.
  • Bible Instruction & Christian Character Development.
Teachers are expected to maintain the integrity of Abeka’s structured, phonics-based approach while differentiating instruction to meet individual student needs.
Specials & Enrichment Instruction:
Students also participate in weekly specialty classes, and teachers collaborate with specials instructors to create a well-rounded educational experience. Specials may include:
  • Spanish.
  • STEAM / Science Lab.
  • Art.
  • Music.
  • Physical Education.
  • Christian Chapel.
The classroom teacher supports student success in these areas and reinforces learning themes across subject areas.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Spiritual Leadership:
  • Integrate biblical truth and Christian worldview throughout instruction.
  • Lead classroom prayer, Bible lessons, and Christian character development.
  • Reflect the love of Jesus in interactions with students, staff, and families.
Instruction & Planning:
  • Develop and implement daily and long-range lesson plans aligned with the Abeka curriculum.
  • Use appropriate assessment tools to monitor student progress.
  • Administer and analyze standardized testing as required.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet varied learning styles and abilities.
  • Maintain accurate attendance and academic records.
Classroom Management:
  • Maintain a structured, orderly, and engaging classroom.
  • Use positive reinforcement and biblically based discipline practices.
  • Counsel students individually as needed.
Parent Communication:
  • Maintain consistent communication with families.
  • Conduct parent-teacher conferences.
  • Provide regular updates regarding academic progress and behavior.
School Community Engagement:
  • Assist with chapel services, special events, programs, and extracurricular activities.
  • Supervise students during recess, lunch, hallway transitions, and other assigned duties.
  • Train and oversee aides or volunteers when applicable.
  • Participate in faculty meetings and professional development.
Professional Growth:
  • Pursue continuing education and professional development.
  • Maintain a substitute teacher folder with updated plans and procedures.
  • Support the school’s mission, enrollment efforts, and community outreach initiatives.
Work Schedule:
  • Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM – 2:30 PM (student hours).
  • Teachers must arrive a minimum of 30 minutes prior to the start of the school day.
  • Attendance required at faculty meetings, professional development days, parent conferences, and school events as scheduled.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, stand, and move for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity to operate a computer and phone.
  • Ability to see, hear, and communicate clearly in classroom and outdoor environments.
  • Lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height.
  • Bend, stoop, kneel, sit on the floor, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
