Job description

JOB SUMMARY
Conducts fitness classes following guidelines established by the Wellness Center Manager, in accordance with national certification organizations to ensure a safe, effective, and fun workout.
Evaluate and set the class environment. Remove any obstructions from the workout area. Set up the music and adjust it to the appropriate volume.
Conduct the pre-class student screening. Make sure participants' medical conditions have been addressed. Explain the pulse-check, target heart rate, and rate of perceived exertion.
Instruct the participants through a 55-minute (approximate) exercise program using the following guidelines:
  1. Demonstrate safe and effective class sequences.
  2. Utilize modification techniques for all fitness levels.
  3. Educate participants using auditory and visual techniques.
  4. Execute smooth sequencing and transitions throughout the entire class.
  5. Use verbal and visual anticipatory to cure for movement transitions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS
Hold a current Silver Sneakers Certification or be able to obtain one before your first day.
Certification in CPR and First Aid.
Must have a minimum of 1 month of Fitness Instruction experience. Must be adequately trained to teach safely, effectively, and in a fun manner. Must attend various fitness workshops to support current fitness standards.
Preferred Knowledge of:
Fitness safety standards and guidelines.
Choreography design
Age respective class / exercise design.
Skill modifications for various fitness levels.
Use safety practices while exercising to minimize exposure to hazards.
Emergency protocol.

Silver Sneakers Foundations Training
Ability to:
Understand community needs in fitness / wellness and evaluate activities according to those needs.
Monitor program compliance with related law / standards, regulations, and guidelines.
Effectively use good customer service skills. Work independently in the absence of supervision.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with program participants, other city employees and officials, community groups, the public and media representatives.
Provide your own substitute instructor from the fitness staff roster to instruct your assigned class.
Substitute for other fitness instructors when needed.
Attend mandatory meetings and training sessions as outlined by the Fitness Coordinator. Maintain up-to-date knowledge in the fitness field (attend workshops, read fitness publications, visit other fitness facility classes).
Assist in training and advising other instructors.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Hold a Group Fitness Instructor Certification from an accredited agency is preferred.
Certifications to teach various fitness classes are preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to perform moderate physical work. To lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally more.
Ability to stand, walk, sit, ride, climb, bend, kneel, twist, and perform similar body movements.
Possesses adequate hand / eye / foot coordination to teach a fitness class.
Ability to see and read instructions, manuals, recreation and athletic programs in progress.
