What is mainframe to AWS migration?

Mainframe to AWS migration refers to the process of moving applications, data, and workloads from legacy mainframe systems to Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure. This transition allows organizations to modernize their IT environment, improve scalability, reduce operational costs, and take advantage of cloud-native services. The process typically involves assessment, planning, data migration, application modernization, and thorough testing to ensure a smooth transition and minimal disruption.

What are common challenges faced when migrating mainframe workloads to AWS, and how can they be addressed?

Migrating mainframe workloads to AWS often involves challenges such as re-platforming legacy applications, ensuring data integrity during transfer, and managing downtime. Teams must carefully assess application dependencies and business requirements, and may need to refactor or rewrite code to be compatible with cloud-native services. Collaboration with AWS solution architects and leveraging migration tools can help smooth the process, while thorough testing and phased migration strategies reduce risks and ensure continuity.
