Job description

Position Summary...The Mainframe Storage Engineer is responsible for supporting and optimizing Walmart’s enterprise mainframe storage infrastructure across complex, high availability parallel sysplex environments. This role manages storage pools, virtual tape, disaster recovery processes, and IBM storage technologies that support mission critical workloads at large scale.
The engineer works closely with mainframe systems, capacity planning, operations, and application teams to ensure resilience, performance, and operational excellence.What you'll do...Storage Operations & Engineering · Manage storage pools, including adding volumes, cleanup, and reclaiming unused volumes. · Provide expert support for space allocation recommendations and usage optimization. · Administer and maintain IBM DS8K storage systems. · Support multiple large-scale parallel sysplex environments with data sharing. · Perform system initialization, performance tuning, and subsystem optimization. Virtual Tape & Backup · Support virtual tape operations, ideally with experience in Luminex virtual tape systems (preferred but not required). · Work with DFHSM for hierarchical storage management. · Utilize tools including FDR and MVSRM for backup, recovery, and storage resource management. Replication, Resiliency & High Availability · Support IBM GDPS environments, including: o Metro Mirror o Global Mirror o Metro-Global Mirror o Hyperswap · Participate in Disaster Recovery planning, testing, and execution. · Maintain DR readiness across mainframe storage assets. System Software & Utilities · Install, upgrade, and maintain IBM and third-party mainframe storage-related products. · Perform SMPE installation and maintenance of program products. · Use IBM utilities including DB2 and IMS utilities. · Utilize JCL, TSO, and mainframe scripting (Rexx, CLIST). What You'll Bring · Deep knowledge of DFHSM, DFSMS, FDR, MVSRM, and related storage utilities. · Experience managing mainframe storage pools and volume lifecycle operations. · Strong understanding of mainframe storage concepts, catalogs, and alias structures. · MVS System commands, catalog management. · Strong skills with: o JCL o TSO o Rexx & CLIST scripting · Experience with SMPE for installation and maintenance. · Experience with UNIX System Services (file systems, mounts). · Experience with multi-site and multi-sysplex environments. · Familiarity with IBM GDPS and replication technologies. · IBM DS8K storage experience required. · Experience with DB2/IMS utilities. · Knowledge of system initialization, tuning, and performance optimization. · Ability to participate in on-call rotation as needed. Preferred Experience While not required, the ideal candidate will have familiarity with: · Disaster Recovery methodologies and tooling. · Mainframe networking concepts. · Experience with storage management and data governance in enterprise environments. · Advanced tuning, automation, and tooling for storage workflows.
