Mainframe Support information

What is a mainframe support?

A Mainframe Support job involves maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing mainframe systems to ensure smooth operations. Responsibilities typically include monitoring system performance, resolving technical issues, applying software updates, and ensuring data security. Mainframe Support professionals work with legacy systems, batch processing, and various programming languages like COBOL or JCL. Their role is critical in industries like banking, healthcare, and government, where mainframes handle large-scale transactions and data processing.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a mainframe support?

Mainframe Support professionals typically monitor system performance, respond to incidents or service requests, and perform routine maintenance to ensure mainframe systems run smoothly. Their day may include troubleshooting job failures, updating software or system configurations, and working with application teams to resolve integration or data transfer issues. They often participate in on-call rotations and collaborate closely with other IT teams, such as network or security specialists. These responsibilities are essential to minimize downtime and maintain uninterrupted business operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in mainframe support, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mainframe Support professional, you need a solid understanding of mainframe operating systems (such as z/OS), basic programming skills, and troubleshooting abilities, typically supported by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Proficiency with tools like IBM ISPF, SDSF, JCL, and familiarity with monitoring and batch processing tools, as well as certifications like IBM Certified System Administrator, are often expected. Strong analytical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills are crucial for effectively addressing technical issues and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These abilities ensure prompt issue resolution and maintain the stability and reliability of critical business systems.

Is mainframe support still in demand?

Mainframe support professionals are still in demand due to the continued reliance of large organizations on mainframe systems for critical operations. Skills in COBOL, JCL, and mainframe troubleshooting remain valuable, especially in finance, government, and insurance sectors where legacy systems are prevalent.

Job Description

WHAT IS THE OPPORTUNITY?

Join RBC's Integrated Systems Testing team and become the critical backbone supporting development and testing operations. You'll maintain state-of-the-art IST and PPVT z/OS mainframe environments that mirror production systems, enabling our development teams to test with confidence. In this role, you'll manage complex infrastructure, troubleshoot technical challenges, drive automation and process improvements, and collaborate directly with developers and testers to accelerate release timelines. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, technically dynamic environment.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

  • Monitor, verify, and resolve infrastructure issues in IST and PPVT environments; perform routine maintenance including distributions and scheduling
  • Execute testing and installation of z/OS infrastructure releases while performing weekend maintenance windows on a rotational basis
  • Provide first-line incident management support for mainframe IST and PPVT environments, ensuring SLA and OLA compliance with timely root cause analysis and documentation
  • Assist application developers and testers with test environment configuration, setup, execution, and technical guidance on z/OS
  • Design and build automation processes to ensure IST and PPVT availability and optimize performance to meet development and release timelines
  • Review and validate test results with infrastructure support teams to ensure objectives are met and quality standards are maintained
  • Participate in problem-solving discussions and process improvement initiatives; collect, maintain, and report accurate operational and performance metrics

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SUCCEED?

Must Have:

  • 2-5+ years of hands-on mainframe experience with exposure to z/OS processes, methodologies, and troubleshooting
  • Strong problem determination and resolution skills with the ability to diagnose infrastructure issues, implement resolutions, and document outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize workload effectively, work independently as a self-starter, and maintain commitment to continuous learning and improvement
  • Proactive mindset with capability to identify process improvements, develop innovative automation solutions, and drive operational efficiency
  • Experience with Core Mainframe Systems (z/OS, IMS, DB2, CICS, VTAM, MQ, Universal Command) and performance tools (RMF, Omegamon)
  • Knowledge of data and file management tools (Connect Direct, File Manager, VSAM) and hands-on experience with JCL, TSO, ISPF, and OMVS

Nice-to-Have:

  • ITIL framework certification and knowledge of IT Standards and Methodologies
  • Experience with change management processes, automation scripting, and weekend/rotational support environments

What's in it for you?

We thrive on the challenge to be our best, progressive thinking to keep growing, and working together to deliver trusted advice to help our clients thrive and communities prosper. We care about each other, reaching our potential, making a difference to our communities, and achieving success that is mutual.

  • Leaders who support your development through coaching and managing opportunities
  • Ability to make a difference and lasting impact
  • Work in a dynamic, collaborative, progressive, and high-performing team
  • A world-class training program in financial services
  • Flexible work/life balance options
  • Opportunities to do challenging work
