Job description

Hi, 

We are looking for someone with DBA experience in IMS, DB2 and z/OS on the mainframe to assist with a massive mainframe exit/modernization project. This is a lead engineer/architect type role. Candidates local to Minnesota are highly preferred but it can be remote for a rockstar. If interested please share your resume.

Job title: Mainframe Engineer (IMS, DB2 z/OS)

Location: Saint Paul, MN 55101--Hybrid

Duration: 3-5 years project

Only on W2 / H1 transfer

Project:

  • Exiting the mainframe - will be a 3-5 year project, modernizing into AWS
  • High visibility, very critical applications

Why is req open?

  • 2 IMS/DB2 mainframe engineers retiring at the end of the year 

Team Size & Breakdown:

  • Will work most closely with the existing IMS/DB2 engineers for knowledge transfer, upskilling, getting engaged on the application level a bit
  • Will also be involved with the Z/OS engineer, some directors and the architecture team 

High-Level Individual Duties: 

  • Analyze current-state IMS and DB2 databases, application dependencies, and data flows.
  • Help define modernization and migration strategy for applications and data.
  • Participate in architectural decision-making around target-state platforms and data storage solutions.
  •  Evaluate where applications and data should reside post-migration (e.g., AWS services, S3, modern data platforms).
  • Work directly with leadership and technical teams to provide recommendations and drive decisions.
  • Assist with mainframe security considerations and operational stability throughout the transition. 

Must-Haves (Concepts & Tools):

  • Expertise with IMS and DB2 on the mainframe.
  • Strong DBA-level knowledge of IMS DB and DB2.
  • Extensive experience with z/OS engineering and administration.
  • Experience supporting or leading mainframe modernization / mainframe exit initiatives.
  • Experience with mainframe security, including RACF.
  • Understanding of AWS and cloud migration patterns

 What Will Win (formerly known as “Nice-to-Haves”):

  • Previous experience migrating to modern cloud platforms (especially AWS) 

Soft Skill Requirements

  • Someone who can dig in, ask questions, get what is needed from the knowledge transfer period

 WFH:

  • Preference for local candidates who can follow the hybrid schedule (3 days onsite).
