We are seeking a Mainframe Automation System Programmer to join our team. This role will involve designing and implementing automation solutions for enterprise mainframe systems to improve operational efficiency, reduce manual tasks, and enhance system reliability. Job Description
Trilyon is seeking an experienced Mainframe Automation System Programmer to support automation initiatives across enterprise mainframe platforms. The Mainframe Automation System Programmer will design, implement, and maintain automation frameworks that streamline system operations, reduce manual intervention, and improve reliability across mission-critical infrastructure.
The Mainframe Automation System Programmer will work with system programmers, operations teams, and application teams to identify automation opportunities across the mainframe ecosystem. This includes developing scripts, implementing event-driven automation, and integrating monitoring tools to improve system observability and operational efficiency.
The Mainframe Automation System Programmer will also be responsible for implementing automation strategies for routine operational tasks, monitoring system health, and building proactive remediation workflows. Additionally, the Mainframe Automation System Programmer will ensure that all automation processes comply with enterprise governance, audit requirements, and security standards while improving overall system performance.
Key Responsibilities
Automation Development & Maintenance

  • Design and develop automation scripts using Rexx, CLIST, and JCL to automate operational tasks and system processes.
  • Implement automation frameworks for routine system operations, health checks, and recovery procedures.
  • Develop automation for WTOR handling and operator command validation logic.
  • Automate batch scheduling workflows using IBM Workload Scheduler (IWS/TWS).
  • Implement self-healing automation mechanisms for common operational issues across mainframe environments.
Monitoring & Alerting
  • Build dashboards and monitoring solutions to track system health metrics including CPU, storage utilization, and queue depths.
  • Implement event-driven automation to enable proactive remediation and automated incident response.
  • Integrate automation with enterprise security monitoring and compliance systems.
Governance & Compliance
  • Ensure automation processes comply with enterprise audit and security standards.
  • Maintain version-controlled repositories for automation scripts and frameworks.
  • Support compliance with enterprise governance frameworks and segregation of duties requirements.
Performance Optimization
  • Automate performance monitoring and optimization tasks across DB2, IMS, and CICS subsystems.
  • Improve batch processing efficiency through job stream optimization and workload balancing.
Collaboration & Documentation
  • Collaborate with infrastructure teams and system administrators to identify automation opportunities and operational improvements.
  • Document automation workflows including runbooks, rollback procedures, and operational documentation.
  • Provide knowledge transfer and training to operations teams on automation tools and frameworks.
Required Skills & Experience
Mainframe System Programming (7+ years)
  • Extensive experience working in mainframe system programming environments.
  • Strong expertise supporting enterprise mainframe operations and automation initiatives.
Mainframe Automation & Scripting (7+ years)
  • Proficiency in Rexx, CLIST, and JCL scripting for automation development.
  • Experience building automation frameworks for operational efficiency.
z/OS Subsystems (6+ years)
  • Experience working with z/OS subsystems including DB2, IMS, CICS, MQ, and JES2/3.
  • Strong understanding of mainframe operational workflows and system commands.
Workload Automation & Scheduling (5+ years)
  • Experience with IBM Workload Scheduler (IWS/TWS) for batch automation and workload orchestration.
