About Software Development at General Motors
General Motors Software Development teams build and deliver innovative, sophisticated systems for GM customers, dealers, and employees around the world. Our teams include industry-leading developers, architects, and designers who use modern development methodologies and technologies to drive innovation, create business value, and deliver exceptional experiences.
About the Role

This role will develop solutions that drive innovation and competitive advantage while ensuring the reliability, security, performance, and maintainability of GM's systems, applications, and platforms.
The Senior Mainframe Software Engineer will participate across the full software development lifecycle, from project initiation and requirements analysis through design, development, testing, deployment, production support, and continuous improvement. The role will collaborate closely with developers, architects, system analysts, business stakeholders, and other cross-functional partners to deliver high-quality solutions aligned with GM standards and requirements.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, maintain, troubleshoot, and modernize enterprise applications using COBOL, PL/I, JCL, DB2, IMS, and related z/OS technologies.

  • Analyze business and technical requirements and translate them into scalable, secure, and maintainable technical designs.

  • Perform coding, unit testing, debugging, code reviews, deployment, and production support activities.

  • Design and implement data mapping, integration, batch-processing, and application-interface solutions.

  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar) throughout the SDLC to accelerate delivery.

  • Work with CICS, VSAM, MQ and other mainframe technologies as required by the application environment.

  • Investigate incidents, perform root-cause analysis, and deliver timely, durable resolutions.

  • Configure, optimize, and deploy packaged software or other enterprise platforms when applicable.

  • Collaborate with architects and project teams to ensure designs, development practices, and delivered solutions meet GM quality and security requirements.

  • Support application modernization, migration, cloud-integration, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Promote efficient code reuse, standardized engineering practices, automated testing, and secure software design.

  • Work effectively in Agile, Scrum, DevOps, iterative, or other software-development environments.

  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to less-experienced team members.

  • Participate in on-call and production-support activities as needed.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field; equivalent professional experience may be considered.

  • 7+ more years of mainframe software-development experience.

  • Strong hands-on experience with COBOL, PL/I, JCL, DB2, IMS, and z/OS.

  • Proven experience with modern code management and CICD practices including GitHub, GitActions, or Azure DevOps (ADO)

  • Understanding and use of GenAI or Agentic AI in analytical and development workflows.

  • Experience with CICS, VSAM, batch processing solutions such as IWS or CA7, and production support.

  • Experience with relational databases, data integration, SQL and enterprise application interfaces.

  • Understanding of the software development lifecycle and software-development methodologies such as Agile, Scrum, Iterative, or Waterfall.

  • Strong understanding of application security, software design, maintainability, and efficient code reuse.

  • Strong analytical, communication, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with technical teams, business stakeholders, and cross-functional partners.

  • Experience with modern mainframe toolsets for discovery, profiling, and migration automation

  • CI/CD experience in defining and managing the build, deployment, and release pipelines

Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience using Java, REST, microservices, and containers (Openshift Container Platform or Docker/Kubernetes) and integrating mainframe and midrange applications in a hybrid ecosystem

  • Solid understanding of midrange platforms and frameworks such as Spring Boot and Spring Framework.

  • IBM tools: IDz, ITOM, RACF, Connect-Direct, IWS, ADDI, ZOWE, ZoS Connect, IBM BoB

  • Hands-on experience in Test Automation

  • Experience with packaged enterprise software such as SAP, Adobe, SFDC or similar platforms.

  • Experience with mainframe modernization, migration, cloud integration, or platform transformation.

  • Experience supporting supply chain, manufacturing, vehicle order management, or other large-scale enterprise systems.
