Job Description:

Role Summary:The L9 Mainframe Software Engineer II is responsible for producing high-quality functional and technical designs, participating in complex application development, and delivering reliable technology solutions aligned to business, architecture, quality, and security standards. This role requires strong hands-on mainframe development experience, the ability to support design and delivery activities, and a learning mindset to adopt modern engineering practices including Git-based development, AI-assisted engineering tools, and mainframe modernization patterns.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce high-quality functional, technical, and user interface designs for applications and systems.

  • Participate in complex application and system development, including project planning, estimation, programming, testing, and status updates.

  • Translate business, Enterprise Architecture, system performance, and development standards into practical application and system designs.

  • Support development of strategic solutions that improve cost effectiveness, delivery efficiency, and stakeholder experience.

  • Conduct code reviews to ensure quality, standards compliance, reusability, maintainability, and secure coding practices.

  • Support Operational Readiness Reviews, gating activities, and required design or delivery sign-offs.

  • Identify application integrity issues, including cross-capability or release-related concerns, and work with teams to resolve them.

  • Transform business requirements and technical research into delivery solutions that meet performance and quality goals.

  • Perform enhancements, troubleshooting, unit testing, and integration testing as per standards and design specifications.

  • Configure and develop custom components in collaboration with analysts, developers, designers, technology partners, and business stakeholders.

  • Ensure applications are free of common coding vulnerabilities and follow corporate security practices.

  • Proactively recommend development, testing, automation, and tooling improvements that support project objectives.

  • Apply and share technical expertise during incident management, including impact assessment, outage analysis, and stakeholder communication.

  • Contribute to knowledge sharing and documentation to improve team effectiveness and long-term maintainability.

  • Adopt modern engineering practices, including Git-based collaboration, reusable design patterns, and AI-assisted development tools where appropriate.

Job Requirements

  • Undergraduate Degree or Technical Certificate.

  • 6+ years of mainframe application design, development, and support experience; financial industry experience preferred.

  • Strong hands-on mainframe skills across COBOL, JCL, VSAM, TSO, ISPF, IMS DC/DB and/or DB2.

  • Experience with source control tools such as Endevor, SCM, Changeman, Git, or GitHub.

  • Experience with job scheduling tools such as CA-7, Autosys, and AWF.

  • Agile delivery experience with ability to work in iterative delivery models and collaborate across cross-functional teams.

  • Experience with ITSM tools including Jira, Confluence, and ServiceNow.

  • Working knowledge of SDLC practices, secure coding standards, incident management, and production support processes.

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze requirements, design technical solutions, complete development activities, and support testing.

  • Ability to apply AI-assisted engineering tools such as GitHub Copilot or similar tools to improve development productivity, documentation quality, code understanding, and delivery outcomes.

  • Strong learning mindset with willingness to adopt modernization practices, AI tools, collaborative engineering workflows, and new development frameworks.

  • Ability to work independently on assigned deliverables while seeking guidance on complex design decisions or broader architecture impacts.

  • Good communication skills with ability to explain technical issues, risks, and solution options to technology partners and stakeholders.
