Job description

Overview

The Sonographer is responsible for performing Screening (ABUS) and Diagnostic Ultrasound procedures including complex and specialized procedures such as breast biopsy procedures and breast cyst aspirations at The Breast Center of Northwest Arkansas. ย 

Breast Sonographer is responsible for following established policies, procedures, and protocols to perform under the general supervision of the Lead Ultra sonographer, Chief Technologist, and Radiologist.ย  In addition, the sonographer must be able to use a wide variety of equipment and computer programs to meet the requirements of the position.ย  Expectation to have an understanding of equipment maintenance and repairs, quality assurance, quality control, and accreditation requirements.

Breast Sonographer independently perform breast ultrasound procedures on varying age groups and perform patient assessment within their scope of practice.

Responsibilities:ย 

  • Perform Screening (ABUS) and Diagnostic Breast Ultrasounds
  • Performs complex and specialized breast procedures
  • Follows procedure protocol as defined by the TBC Radiologists
  • Proficient in the technical operation of all Ultrasound equipment; uses proper care in handling equipment
  • Adheres to established section and organizational protocols, QA guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor supplies and equipment inventories in the Ultrasound suites
  • Implement techniques to minimize the occurrence of artifacts and repeat studies
  • Knowledge of Sonography QA and Infection Control expectations
  • Prioritizes the correction of errors in PACS to ensure the radiologist may complete interpretations in a timely manner
  • Understand and communicate patient education material to the patient
  • Communicate with Lead Sonographer, Chief Tech, Director and Radiologists regarding questions or concerns

Sonography Procedures

  • Set-up and prepare the ultrasound suite for Sonography procedure
  • Obtain patient history, review images and MagView (EMR) information for accuracy
  • Attends to patient needs for comfort; shows compassion toward patient
  • Assist patients in dressing and navigation through clinic
  • Keep the work area neat and clean
  • Charges procedures correctly and in compliance with all guidelines
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned

Responsibilities Supporting Patient Care

  • Performs patient assessment within the Sonographer scope of practice
  • Bill procedures and associated supplies
  • Uses a variety of imaging equipment and understands the capabilities and limitations of each piece of equipment
  • Uses the image archiving system and maintains expertise in data and image transfer
  • Notifies Chief Technologist & Director when equipment malfunctions, notification to the appropriate vendor
  • Cleans, disinfects, and inspects equipment
  • Check the status of the sonography equipment to ensure device is in proper operating condition
  • Understand and communicate patient education material to the patient
  • Participates in an ongoing continuing education program to satisfy ARDMS requirements

Qualifications:

  • Certification by appropriate body (ARDMS or ARRT)
  • CPR

Preferred:

  • ARDMS Breast Registry
  • ARRT (R)(M) Radiology and Mammography
  • Arkansas Radiological License
