How much do magnetic thin films jobs pay per week?

As of Sep 9, 2026, the average weekly pay for magnetic thin films in the United States is $1,994.19, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $1,596.15 and $2,413.46 per week, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are magnetic thin films?

Magnetic thin films are very thin layers of magnetic material, typically ranging from a few nanometers to several micrometers in thickness. These films are used in a variety of applications, including data storage devices, sensors, and spintronic components. Their magnetic properties can differ significantly from those of bulk materials due to their reduced dimensions and interfaces. Researchers and engineers study and manipulate these properties to develop advanced electronic and magnetic devices.

What are the common collaborative projects for professionals working with magnetic thin films, and how do they typically interact with other departments?

Professionals specializing in magnetic thin films often collaborate on multidisciplinary projects that involve materials science, electronics, and engineering teams. They regularly work with researchers in physics, electrical engineers, and quality assurance personnel to develop, characterize, and optimize thin film materials for applications such as data storage, sensors, or spintronics. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as projects may involve both experimental lab work and coordination with manufacturing or R&D departments to scale up successful materials. This collaborative environment provides valuable exposure to new technologies and fosters professional development across related fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a magnetic thin films engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Magnetic Thin Films Engineer, you need a strong background in materials science, solid-state physics, and thin film deposition techniques, usually supported by a relevant engineering or physics degree. Familiarity with sputtering, molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), characterization tools like XRD, SEM, and related simulation software is essential. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills in this field. These competencies ensure the precise development and optimization of magnetic thin films for advanced technological applications.

What is the difference between Magnetic Thin Films vs Magnetic Materials Technician?

AspectMagnetic Thin FilmsMagnetic Materials Technician
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in materials science, physics, or engineeringRequires similar degrees, often with additional certifications in materials testing
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, cleanrooms, manufacturing facilitiesLaboratories, production lines, testing facilities
Industry UsageUsed in electronics, data storage, sensorsSupports manufacturing, testing, and quality control of magnetic materials

Magnetic Thin Films specialists focus on designing and depositing thin magnetic layers for electronic devices, while Magnetic Materials Technicians handle testing, quality control, and maintenance of magnetic materials. Both roles require knowledge of magnetic properties but differ in scope and application.

Job description

## Postdoctoral Research AssociateApplylocations: Boston, MA (Main Campus)time type: Full timeposted on: Posted Todayjob requisition id: R141354**About the Opportunity***This job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. It is not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of personnel so classified.* JOB SUMMARY The Stevenson Lab in the Department of Physics seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to develop and apply quantum sensors to problems in biophysics. Quantum sensors exploit the coherence and state-dependent response of individual quantum systems to detect magnetic, electric, and thermal signals with high sensitivity and nanoscale spatial resolution, opening access to biophysical structure and dynamics that are difficult or impossible to reach with conventional techniques. The postdoc will join an interdisciplinary program that combines quantum sensing instrumentation, surface and interfacial chemistry, and the physics of the target systems, with current directions including biocompatible sensing platform development, electron transfer and spin states in metalloproteins, and nanoscale dynamics in biological membranes. There is substantial scope to shape a specific project around the candidate's background and interests - whether in quantum sensing and instrumentation, surface/interfacial chemistry, or biophysics - and we welcome strong applicants from any of these areas with enthusiasm for interdisciplinary work. The position is based at the Boston campus and is an in-person, experimental role. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Biophysics, or a related field* Experience in lab-based experiments* Demonstrated ability to analyze experimental data (e.g., in Python, MATLAB, or equivalent) KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES 1. Design, perform, and analyze nanoscale magnetic resonance experiments on the group's custom-built optical microscope (30%);2. Develop sample-integration strategies that localize biomolecules near quantum sensors, such as supported lipid bilayers, thin atomic-layer-deposited oxide films, and covalent or electrostatic functionalization (30%);3. Build and optimize experimental hardware, including optical excitation and collection paths, microwave and RF delivery (30%);4. Disseminate results through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations, and contribute to grant proposals and reports (5%); and5. Mentor and support graduate and undergraduate researchers and contribute to a collaborative, interdisciplinary lab culture (5%).**Position Type**Research**Additional Information**Northeastern University considers factors such as candidate work experience, education and skills when extending an offer.Northeastern has a comprehensive benefits package for benefit eligible employees.
