Job Overview
The Director, MFO Sourcing leads the creation and execution of product that supports the Backstage Private Brand business. The Director drives the strategy and execution of product sourcing, development, and operations to meet company capability, delivery, margin, and growth goals. In partnership with the merchandising organization, overseas Private Brands, and business stakeholders, the Director identifies key opportunities across Macy's, Inc. that increase the profitability and sales of Macy's Backstage Private Brand. The Director also leads efforts to source and develop off-price product for marketing and distribution to non-Macy's, Inc. international accounts.
What You Will Do
  • Define the long-range, annual, and seasonal sourcing and product development strategy for Macy's Backstage Private Brands across assigned categories (Knits, Wovens, Center Core, and Home), including supplier segmentation, regional and vendor profiles, category mix, costing guidance, and growth/complexity targets; lead communication and development of annual and seasonal plans with key stakeholders.
  • Support development of the pre-season assortment vision led by the Backstage Merchandising teams.
  • Partner with Buying and Planning to ensure department-level financial targets align to the assortment strategy; collaborate with Design to make modifications as needed.
  • Oversee first-cost, style-level analysis and manage cost iterations driven by prototype changes through final style approval.
  • Review development sample execution and monitor line development activities throughout the season to ensure timelines and standards are met.
  • Ensure negotiated costs deliver IMU targets established by product teams, by category and style.
  • Partner across internal teams (e.g., Macy's Product Development, OSO Merchants, Sourcing, Fabric) and external stakeholders (e.g., vendors) to drive results and influence change.
  • Collaborate with the International Wholesale team to identify and execute revenue opportunities for external customers.
  • Manage and develop a team of Associates and Assistants who support seasonal execution of product development.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.
  • In addition to the essential duties mentioned above, other duties may be assigned.

Skills You Will Need
Strategic Sourcing & Supplier Management: Deep expertise in end-to-end sourcing strategy, including supplier segmentation, vendor selection, negotiations, and contract/commercial management to optimize capability, speed, and cost.
Costing, IMU Delivery & Margin Optimization: Proven ability to lead first-cost, style-level analysis; manage cost iterations through prototype changes; and secure negotiated costs that deliver IMU and margin targets by category and style.
Product Development & Line Planning Acumen: Strong understanding of product development lifecycle and line plan architecture, including target costing, materials knowledge, and development-to-production readiness across private brand categories.
Analytical Decision-Making (Risk & Opportunity): Ability to identify, quantify, and communicate sourcing, cost, and delivery risks/opportunities; apply sound judgment to prioritize actions that maximize growth and profitability.
Stakeholder Communication & Executive Presence: Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills with the ability to clearly communicate plans, recommendations, and trade-offs to senior and cross-functional stakeholders.
People Leadership & Talent Development: Demonstrated capability to lead, coach, and develop a team of Associates and Assistants; set clear expectations; and drive accountability for seasonal execution.
Agility & Change Adaptability: Comfortable operating in a fast-changing environment; adjusts plans and strategy quickly based on evolving business needs, market dynamics, and vendor performance.
Tools & Systems Proficiency: Proficient in MS Office Suite and PLM systems; able to use tools to drive visibility, track deliverables, and support data-driven decisions.
Relationship Management & Negotiation: Strong relationship-building skills and decisive negotiation approach to deliver mutually beneficial outcomes with internal partners and external suppliers.
Who You Are
  • Candidates with a bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply. 5-plus years of experience in product development, sourcing, merchandising, or management consulting. 3-plus years of leadership experience.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
  • Able to travel overseas for vendor visits (existing and new) and product development trips.
