What is a machinist manager?

Machinist Managers are professionals who oversee the daily operations of machinists and machine shops. They are responsible for supervising staff, scheduling production, maintaining equipment, and ensuring that safety and quality standards are met. In addition to managing personnel, Machinist Managers often help with training, process improvement, and troubleshooting technical issues. Their role is critical to efficient production and the timely delivery of precision-machined parts.

How does a machinist manager typically balance hands-on technical work with administrative responsibilities?

As a Machinist Manager, you'll find that your role often requires a careful balance between overseeing day-to-day machine shop operations and handling administrative tasks such as scheduling, budgeting, and staff management. While you'll sometimes step in for technical troubleshooting or process improvements, much of your time will be spent coordinating workflow, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and mentoring team members. Strong organizational and communication skills are crucial, as you'll regularly interact with machinists, engineers, and upper management to keep projects on track. This combination of technical oversight and leadership offers a dynamic work environment with opportunities to impact both production quality and team development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machinist manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machinist Manager, you need in-depth knowledge of machining processes, leadership experience, and a background in mechanical or manufacturing engineering, often supported by relevant certifications or a technical degree. Familiarity with CNC programming, CAD/CAM software, and shop management systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and team management skills help drive productivity and maintain a positive work environment. These competencies ensure efficient operations, high product quality, and the successful oversight of machinist teams.

Job Description:

Barry-Wehmiller Converting Solutions is seeking a dynamic, results-driven Global Sales Leader to drive the growth of our Modifications business worldwide. • Identify, pursue, and secure new business opportunities while expanding relationships with existing customers.
  • Conduct a data-driven review of strategic accounts and territory assignments. Reassess long-standing accounts and coverage models where growth has plateaued or declined - to identify new areas of opportunity and ensure the team is structured to hit sales targets.
  • Analyze market trends, competitor activity, and customer feedback to inform sales strategy and uncover new opportunities.

Team Leadership

  • Directly manage, coach, and develop sales leaders and team members across multiple countries and regions, adapting leadership style to each team's maturity level and market context.
  • Provide hands-on industry and product coaching to newer team members while driving strategic re-alignment and accountability with more tenured teams.
  • Lead, mentor, and inspire a high-performing global sales team to achieve sales targets and customer satisfaction goals.
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement, operational excellence, and customer-centric solutions within the sales organization.

Sales Process & CRM

  • Build and standardize CRM processes and early-stage pipeline management practices to create consistent, accurate, and visible sales funnel reporting across all regions.
  • Coach the team on disciplined pipeline management and forecasting to improve deal visibility, conversion rates, and overall sales performance.
  • Prepare and present regular sales forecasts, performance reports, and strategic recommendations to senior leadership.

Cross-Functional Alignment

  • Partner closely with the strategic marketing leader and commercial operations leader to ensure tight alignment between sales, marketing, and operations.
  • Collaborate with engineering, service, and operations teams to ensure seamless delivery of modification solutions that meet or exceed customer expectations.
  • Champion the integration of customer feedback into product development and drive improvements in operational responsiveness, including quote turnaround times.
  • Represent Barry-Wehmiller at industry events, trade shows, and customer meetings to enhance brand visibility and credibility.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, or a related field; MBA preferred.
  • Proven track record in sales leadership, preferably in industrial machinery, converting equipment, or aftermarket services.
  • Strong technical knowledge of machinery modifications and retrofits.
  • Demonstrated experience directly managing and developing teams across multiple countries/regions - including setting regional strategy, coaching remote team members, and driving performance across diverse cultural and market contexts.
  • Experience building or optimizing CRM-based sales processes and pipeline/funnel management practices.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to influence cross-functionally with marketing and operations partners.
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical skills and business acumen; comfortable making data-informed calls on account and territory prioritization.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 35-45% both domestically and internationally.
