Position Summary:
The Machining Supervisor - 1st Shift is responsible for leading and coordinating daily machining operations to ensure production requirements are achieved safely, efficiently, and in accordance with Davis Machine quality standards.
This is a hands-on shop-floor leadership position responsible for providing daily direction to machinists and production employees, monitoring workflow and priorities, addressing machining and production issues, and holding employees accountable for safety, quality, productivity, attendance, and performance expectations.
The Machining Supervisor works closely with Operations, Engineering, Programming, Quality, Planning, and Human Resources to ensure the shift has the people, equipment, tooling, information, and support necessary to meet production commitments.
Responsibilities and Duties
  • Lead and supervise daily 1st shift machining operations, providing clear priorities and direction to employees.
  • Ensure production schedules, daily commitments, and customer delivery requirements are understood and achieved.
  • Monitor workflow throughout the shift and proactively address bottlenecks, downtime, staffing issues, and other production constraints.
  • Maintain a strong presence on the shop floor and provide hands-on leadership and support to machinists.
  • Monitor employee performance, productivity, attendance, quality, and adherence to company policies and procedures.
  • Coach and develop employees while reinforcing accountability and consistent performance expectations.
  • Partner with Human Resources and Operations leadership on employee performance, corrective action, attendance, and other employee-related matters.
  • Support the training and development of machinists and ensure employees are appropriately trained for assigned work.
  • Promote and enforce all company safety requirements and immediately address unsafe conditions or behaviors.
  • Ensure employees follow applicable work instructions, drawings, specifications, inspection requirements, and Quality procedures.
  • Partner with Quality to investigate nonconformances, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions.
  • Work with Engineering and CNC Programming to resolve machining, setup, tooling, cycle-time, and process issues.
  • Assist employees in troubleshooting complex machining and production problems.
  • Monitor machine utilization, productivity, scrap, rework, downtime, and other key performance indicators.
  • Coordinate staffing, overtime, and daily labor assignments based on production requirements.
  • Conduct or participate in daily production meetings and communicate shift priorities, issues, and results.
  • Ensure effective communication and handoff between shifts.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, delivery, productivity, and cost.
  • Maintain an organized, professional, and accountable shop-floor environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Operations leadership.

Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Business, or related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of machining experience, with aerospace, defense, or other highly regulated precision manufacturing strongly preferred.
  • 2+ years of CNC Programming experience
  • 3+ years of direct supervisory experience on ops aerospace environment
  • 5+ years' experience with complex CNC multi-axis machining.
  • Strong understanding of CNC machining processes, tooling, setups, and production workflow.
  • Experience supporting or overseeing 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC machining operations in a precision manufacturing environment.
  • Experience reading and interpreting aerospace engineering drawings, GD&T, and customer specifications.
  • Knowledge of machining castings, billet materials, and complex aerospace components.
  • Working knowledge of production scheduling, capacity, and labor planning.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA requirements and manufacturing safety practices.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ERP/MES systems.

Preferred
  • Familiarity with aerospace machining of aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, Inconel, castings, and billet materials.
  • Experience leading Lean Manufacturing, Continuous Improvement, or Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) initiatives.
  • Experience in an AS9100-certified facility; familiarity with AS9102 first article inspection and NCR/MRB processes.
  • Lean/Six Sigma training or certification.
  • Experience supervising multi-shift or 24/5-24/7 operations.
