Machine Vision and Computer Vision are related fields but differ mainly in application and environment. Machine Vision is primarily used in industrial settings for automation and quality control, requiring specialized hardware and engineering skills. Computer Vision is broader, often involving AI and software development for applications like autonomous vehicles and image analysis. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job focus within the tech industry.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Machine Vision roles?

Professionals in Machine Vision often encounter challenges related to integrating vision systems with existing automation equipment and ensuring reliable performance in variable lighting or environmental conditions. Troubleshooting hardware-software interactions and maintaining accurate image recognition in high-speed production environments are also frequent hurdles. Collaborating closely with cross-disciplinary teams, such as robotics engineers and production managers, is essential to address these challenges effectively and deliver robust solutions.

What is machine vision?

Machine vision is a field of technology and engineering that enables computers and machines to interpret and process visual information from the world, typically using cameras and image processing software. It is widely used in industrial automation for tasks such as inspection, measurement, and object recognition. Machine vision systems can analyze images to detect defects, guide robots, and ensure quality control. They play a crucial role in manufacturing, logistics, and many other sectors where visual inspection or guidance is required.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Machine Vision Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machine Vision Engineer, you need strong knowledge of image processing, computer vision algorithms, and programming languages like Python or C++, typically supported by a degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with machine vision software (such as OpenCV, HALCON, or MATLAB), industrial cameras, and hardware integration is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing robust vision systems that ensure accuracy and efficiency in automated inspection and quality control processes.

Job description

Integration Engineer - OT & ERP

About the Position

Power Design Inc. is a $1.4B national design-build multi-trade contractor operating across 28 states. We self-perform everything and are building the automation platform that integrates five operational domains - prefab manufacturing, LFG and switchgear manufacturing, wire processing, the DC and warehouse, and logistics - into a single operational data layer running on Oracle Fusion.

The manufacturing division is approximately 3 years old. The automation function is new. The integration architecture you design will be foundational - and you will build it from scratch.

About the Opportunity

You are responsible for making every machine PDI deploys talk to Oracle Fusion. That means integration architecture across manufacturing, WMS, and the Operational Technology (OT) data layer - from AMRs and cobots on the floor to the ERP dashboards that ops leadership uses to make decisions. When automation goes live, data flows. That is your accountability. This is not a role for someone who needs time to ramp up - you will be evaluating vendors and leading deployments in the first 90 days, and every system goes live integrated.

Position Responsibilities

  • Design and own the OT/IT integration architecture connecting all automation systems - AMRs, cobots, machine vision, wire processing - to Oracle Fusion Manufacturing and WMS.
  • Define and enforce data standards across all deployed systems. Every machine feeds the platform consistently and cleanly.
  • Partner with the Lead Automation Engineer and Automation Engineer (Distribution) on integration requirements during vendor evaluations and FAT/SAT processes.
  • Work directly with PDI's IT organization to ensure OT integrations align with enterprise security, architecture, and data governance standards.
  • Own the middleware layer and any integration tooling (APIs, messaging queues, edge compute) required to get machine data into Fusion reliably.
  • Support the Analyst by ensuring data quality and availability for capacity reporting and ROI tracking.
  • Contribute to Year 2-3 roadmap planning as the data platform expands and feeds PDI's operational AI program.

Here's What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years in OT/IT integration or industrial systems integration, with demonstrated experience connecting factory-floor systems to enterprise platforms.
  • Direct Oracle Fusion experience required - Manufacturing and/or WMS modules. Candidates with general ERP integration backgrounds but no Fusion depth will not be competitive.
  • Familiarity with OT protocols and environments: MQTT, OPC-UA, SCADA/PLC data extraction, edge compute patterns.
  • Experience with API-based integration, middleware platforms, and data pipeline architecture in industrial or manufacturing settings.
  • Strong ability to work across functional lines - you will coordinate between automation engineers, IT, and operations leadership simultaneously.
  • Electrical, industrial engineering, or computer science background preferred.
  • Experience supporting greenfield deployments (not just maintaining existing integrations) is essential.
  • Demonstrate and uphold Power Design's core values, which include integrity, accountability, teamwork, innovation, and growth.

At Power Design, we are committed to providing an environment of mutual respect where equal employment opportunities are available to all applicants and teammates without regard to race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy, national origin, age, physical and mental disability, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, genetic information, military and veteran status, and any other characteristic protected by applicable law.
