What is a machine vision sales engineer?

Machine Vision Sales Engineers are professionals who specialize in selling and supporting machine vision systems, which use cameras and computers to inspect and analyze objects in industrial or manufacturing environments. They combine technical expertise with sales skills to understand customer needs, recommend appropriate vision solutions, and assist with implementation. These engineers often work closely with both customers and internal engineering teams to ensure successful deployment of vision technologies. Their role includes providing product demonstrations, technical presentations, and ongoing customer support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machine vision sales engineer?

To thrive as a Machine Vision Sales Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering or technical sales, with knowledge of machine vision systems, optics, and automation. Familiarity with image processing software, hardware integration, and CRM tools, as well as relevant certifications like Certified Vision Professional (CVP), is often required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills help you translate complex technology into client solutions and foster long-term partnerships. These skills are crucial for understanding client needs, delivering effective solutions, and driving sales growth in a highly technical market.

What are the common challenges faced by machine vision sales engineers when integrating solutions for clients?

Machine Vision Sales Engineers often encounter challenges such as aligning client requirements with the capabilities of available vision technology, addressing compatibility issues with existing production systems, and effectively communicating complex technical features to non-technical stakeholders. Additionally, they must ensure that proposed solutions meet both budgetary and performance expectations, which may require customized demonstrations or proof-of-concept setups. Success in this role often depends on strong collaboration with both clients and engineering teams to ensure seamless integration and customer satisfaction.

What is the difference between Machine Vision Sales Engineer vs Machine Vision Application Engineer?

Job description

TRC Talent Solutions is partnering with a rapidly scaling innovator in the manufacturing tech space to find a high-performing Vision Sales Engineer. If you want to be at the forefront of the AI manufacturing wave and own a lucrative territory, we want to talk to you.

The Company

Our client is bringing the cutting edge of AI computer vision to manufacturing, solving complex inspection problems that traditional machine vision cannot touch. They are a full-stack company deploying GPU-powered cameras on production lines and running inference on the edge.

This is not a startup building demosthey grew roughly 700% last year. Their customers love the product because it works: high accuracy, fast deployment, and an operator-friendly experience. You will be walking into a warm territory; California already has major logos, executive buy-in, and active deployments running on real production lines.

The Opportunity: Vision Sales Engineer
  • Location: San Francisco, CA (Bay Area rooted)

  • Work Model: Field-first (30% to 50% travel across California manufacturing plants)

  • Compensation: $200,000 $250,000 OTE (Base + Commission/Bonus) + Comprehensive Benefits

This role is a rare hybrid of deep technical execution and quota-carrying sales. You will hunt new inspection points and expand warm accounts (roughly a 50/50 split), backed by a dedicated BDR team to feed you inbound pipeline.

What Youll Own
  • Territory Revenue: Own pipeline, forecasting, and revenue outcomes for California. Take qualified BDR leads from creation to close.

  • Technical Discovery: Partner directly with Quality, Process, Automation, and Ops teams to understand how they solve inspection today and where incumbents fail.

  • Live Technical Showcases: Demo the product on the factory floor. Reason live on unfamiliar inspection problems (lighting, optics, fixturing) and clearly demonstrate technical deltas like accuracy and operator usability.

  • End-to-End POCs: Own the pilot process, including line access, data collection, camera placement, and defining the acceptance criteria that converts a pilot into a purchase.

  • Executive Closing: Negotiate and close with speed. Convert first-station wins into repeatable rollouts across lines, plants, and global sites.

Who You Are
  • Hands-On Technical Depth: You have personally built, deployed, tested, or debugged real machine vision or automated inspection systems in production environments (not just managed them from the buyer side).

  • Sales & Closing Pedigree: You have owned a real number, hunted new logos, and closed/expanded revenue.

  • Factory Floor Fluency: You have spent significant time in discrete or process manufacturing plants and know how to talk to Quality and Ops buyers.

  • Incumbent Knowledge: You have experience selling or competing against traditional machine vision platforms (e.g., Cognex, Keyence, Omron, Teledyne) and know where their rule-based systems break down.

  • Systems Experience: Familiarity with PLCs, industrial networks, and integrating automation equipment.

Equal Employment Opportunity TRC Talent Solutions is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other legally protected characteristic.
