Job Summary: 

The Machining Lead is responsible for setup and operation of each machine in the machine shop per company procedures and customer orders. Ensure quality parts are made in an efficient manner, reducing the cost of manufacturing and increasing quality. The Lead is responsible for overseeing training new hires, machining processes, safety protocol, communicate expectations, and department goals & administrative tasks. The Lead will collaborate with the Shop Manager to coordinate employee schedules, time off, and machines to best fit the production needs of the company.  


Job Responsibilities:

Work Center Operations

  • Perform all the required functions with minimal supervision and little to no instruction within the Machine Shop. 
  • Interprets blueprints and engineering specifications; uses shop travelers and determines sequence of operations and method of setup; uses a variety of machinist's hand tools and precision measuring instruments 
  • Detects and reports defective materials or questionable conditions to the department supervisor. Coaches machine operators on how to prevent defective parts/product. 
  • Train new hires in machine operation, production & quality processes
  • Inspects parts and takes measurement to determine if the part meets tolerance requirements.
  • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and manipulates machine controls as required. 
  • Verifies conformance of finished part to specifications and ensures fit, form, function, through first article build process. 
  • Maintains the work area and equipment in a clean orderly condition and follows company safety regulations.  
  • Follow company safety procedures and embrace culture of safety within the machine shop. 
  • Perform miscellaneous duties and projects as assigned and required. 
  • Maintain and review skills matrix and training documentation 
  • Review, edit, and approve: Machine Operator's job time entry, shop tracker, job tracker, and job entry compliance? 
  • Regular updates to employee performance journals 

Compliance & Documentation 

  • Review, edit, and approve: Machine Shop Job Time Entry, Shop Tracker, Job Tracker, and Job Entry Compliance 
  • Regular updates to new hire 30, 60, and 90-Day performance documentation 
  • Manage team members schedules and approve time off requests 
  • Performs regular first article checks and audits to ensure quality 

Process Improvement & Collaboration 

  • Coordinate Traveler/Work Instructions Document Change Requests (DCR) to Engineering 
  • Performs or schedules prescribed preventative maintenance on machines as required. 
  • Coordinate with Quality on Tool Calibration 
  • Conduct training and development for employees and new/updated processes 

Requirements

 Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate degree is a plus 
  • 3+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment, with at least 1 year in a leadership or lead role 
  • Values quality over quantity, trust, safety and enjoys work environment that requires problem solving 
  • Know how to use calipers, measuring tools, and clean sharp edges. 
  • Basic knowledge of data entry, ERP systems and production tracking tools 
  • Comfortable with communicating with upper management and others within the organization 
  • Comfortable with giving feedback and conflict management.   
  • Enjoys working with a team and pushing them to be high achievers 
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast paced environment and meet production quotas 
  • 18+ years of age

Working Conditions 

Work is performed in a manufacturing facility, with drill presses, metal cutting, and other industrial equipment. The employee is regularly exposed to vibrations. Noise levels fluctuate from moderate to high requiring ear protection. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must wear appropriate personal safety protection equipment. This equipment will vary based upon the work location and type of work being performed but often will include safety glasses, closed-toed/heeled shoes, and sometimes may include protective clothing. 


Physical Requirements: All Levels 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to: 

  • Stand, sit, walk and reach for long periods of time. 
  • Repetitive hand and wrist motions while handling large and small parts 
  • Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, reach above and below desk level, talk, hear and communicate accurate information 
  • Observe details at a close range. 
  • Moves items and products weighing up to 50 pounds across short distances. 
  • Easily move from place to place in a manufacturing facility. 
  • Adhere to all safety & quality requirements. 
  • Ability to pass pre-employment & random drug screenings
