Job description

Machine Shop Quality Inspector 

Karman Space & Defense is a leader in the rapid design, development, and production of critical, next-generation system solutions that align with the U.S. Department of War and its allies’ core mission priorities, and meet the accelerating demand for access to space. Building on nearly 50 years of success, we deliver Payload & Protection Systems, Aero/Hydrodynamic Interstage Systems, and Propulsion & Launch Systems to more than 80 prime contractors supporting over 130 space and defense programs.

This role is part of our Hypersonic and Strategic Missile Defense business, which designs, develops, and delivers highly dependable missile systems for hypersonic and strategic missile defense missions. We provide integrated, mission-ready hardware that brings together multiple technologies into unified systems engineered to perform in demanding operational environments. Our tip-to-tail capabilities include payload protection and deployment systems, propulsion systems, aerodynamic interstage systems, separation systems, missile subsystems, shroud systems, launch systems, and payload integration solutions.

The Machine Shop Quality Inspector supports product quality and manufacturing performance by programming coordinate measuring machines, performing precision inspections, documenting nonconformances, and partnering with quality, engineering, and machining teams to ensure machined components meet aerospace and defense requirements. This role provides hands-on metrology expertise and helps drive consistent inspection execution across manufacturing operations.

Schedule

  • 4x10 schedule, Monday-Thursday, 3:30 PM-1:30 AM.

Responsibilities

  • Programs Hexagon Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) and Romer Arm equipment using PC-DMIS software and performs associated inspections.
  • Develops part setup plans to support accurate and efficient CMM inspections.
  • Performs dimensional inspections of machined components using metrology equipment and established quality standards.
  • Executes AS9102 First Article Inspection (FAI) activities and related documentation.
  • Verifies product compliance with engineering drawings, specifications, and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) requirements.
  • Documents and communicates nonconformances identified during inspection activities.
  • Trains inspectors on the execution of CMM inspection programs.
  • Collaborates with quality, engineering, and manufacturing teams to address inspection and quality issues.
  • Supports additional quality assurance activities as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proficiency with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Three or more years of experience programming Hexagon Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) using PC-DMIS software.
  • Experience working within AS9100 or equivalent quality systems.
  • This position requires U.S. person status under U.S. export control laws, including U.S. citizens and nationals, lawful permanent residents, refugees, and asylees.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Epicor enterprise resource planning (ERP) software.
