Job description

Job Summary

Supervises the MPZ Machine Shop. Primary focus on MPZ Machine Shop activities, workflow, material inventories, machinist supervision and training.  Additional responsibilities include Coherent Saxonburg engineering support for quotations and new part creations, as well as coordination with all Saxonburg production engineering and management for tooling needs, costing and alignment for use of in-house vs. 3rd party machining based on capabilities, loading and overall per part cost of machining services and transition from product development to large volume production.

Due to ITAR compliance, this position requires a U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident Alien, or Protected Individual per 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee all MPZ Machine Shop activities related to including work orders, scheduling, machinist supervision and training.
  • Technical liaison to engineering providing guidance on machining costs, capabilities, loading and new part creation planning and quotation.
  • Technical liaison to Coherent Saxonburg production departments on machining needs for tooling, product development and transition from development to high volume production.
  • Technical liaison to external machine shop vendors for procurement, quality and cost objectives to meet needs of Coherent production and product realization.
  • Initial level support on new product realization machining needs including tooling, fixture fabrication, tolerance and quality needs and in-house machine shop capabilities and availability.
  • Development of in-house machine shop capabilities through equipment specification, installation, training and strategic hiring of personnel needed to support Coherent Saxonburg product development.
  • Responsible for machine shop specific systems, procedures and process development, implementation, training and execution
  • Liaison with Trade/Technical schools for hiring and development of entry level machinists.

Education & Experience

  • High school graduate and technical school degree or equivalent technical experience.
  • Must have experience in a broad range of machining techniques and materials. 
  • Must have machine shop supervisory experience.
  • Must have Department of Labor and Industry Journeyman's certification.
  • Must have positive endorsement of the MPZ Engineering staff. 
  • Experience in CAD/CAM and CNC is preferred.

Skills & Other Requirements

  • Must be able to effectively supervise multiple personnel
  • Strong technical trouble shooting, and problem resolution required.
  • Excellent communication skills. 
  • Must be comfortable with a hands-on approach, able to support trouble shooting efforts in an industrial environment.
  • Must be able to understand and meet regulatory requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of machine programming, machining techniques with ability to effectively train machinists and meet Journeyman's certification program needs.
  • Machining/machine shop operations experience is required.
  • Understanding of environmental hazard control, dust/fume mitigation and working condition monitoring to meet regulatory requirements and company EHS policies.

Working Conditions

  • Supports a 24/7 operation.
  • Involves the handling and storage of toxic substances requiring significant attention to detail.

  • Respirator, supplied air and SCBA use required. 

Physical Requirements

  • Standing or sitting up to 12 hours per day (typically 8 hours)
  • Lifting (Medium Work - Exerting 20-50 lbs. of force occasionally)
  • Pushing/Pulling (Medium Work - Exerting 20-50 lbs. of force occasionally)
  • Must be able to climb, bend, reach, push and pull regularly.
  • Must be able to function mentally and physically while wearing safety equipment for extended periods.
  • Ability to safely work on equipment with rotational hazards.

Safety Requirements

All employees are required to follow the site EHS procedures and COHERENT Corporate EHS standards.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements:

  • Must be able to wear proper PPE including safety glasses, goggle, splash shields, steel toe/metatarsal shoes, long pants, sleeved uniform, and hearing protection.
  • Must be able to wear dust mask, respirator, or supplied air for extended periods.
  • PFT + respirator Pre-employment physical.
  • PFT + respirator annual physicals (Emergency Response Team)

Due to inventory quantities of some highly hazardous materials, MPZ is covered by OSHA standard for Process Safety Management, as well as EPA's Risk Management program.  All MPZ personnel are required to understand the importance of following all operating procedures to maintain regulatory compliance with these programs.
