Standard Steel is a leading manufacturer of forged steel wheels and axles for freight railcars, locomotives and passenger railcars. It is the only producer of forged steel wheels for railcars and locomotives in North America.  Customers include major Class I railroads in North America, freight railcar builders, railcar and locomotive maintenance shops, the Amtrak national railroad, locomotive builders and regional transit authorities.
Standard Steel, LLC, and its affiliated companies were purchased by Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. and Sumitomo Corporation in 2011, but the existing facility has been producing forgings since 1795. In 2012, Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. merged with Nippon Steel Corporation to become Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation, the majority owner of Standard Steel.
Standard Steel's manufacturing plant is located at 500 North Walnut Street in Burnham, Pennsylvania.

Job Description

We are currently accepting applications for the following positions.

HOOK-UP / GAUGER

JOB DUTIES

  • Requires no Supervision except occasional work instructions.
  • Performs all operations in a safe manner while providing proper care for the equipment, machine(s), and product.
  • Operates equipment as efficiently as possible to maximize productivity across all product types while maintaining safe work procedures and quality specifications provided by the company.
  • Maintains good housekeeping of the assigned work area and company property.
  • Follows production planning as assigned by Supervision.
  • Inspects and lubricates equipment prior and during operation to verify they are in proper working condition.
  • Notifies Supervision when equipment/machine(s) require repair or adjustments and assists with such as necessary.
  • Possesses thorough knowledge of the equipment’s mechanical, hydraulic, and control technologies to properly operate the equipment.
  • Performs laboring duties in Machine Shop 1 to clean/remove borings and turnings from the shop and machines.
  • Gauges, sorts, and marks product utilizing a certified measuring device for proper staging of the K&T Line.
  • Operates a lift truck to empty scrap boxes when necessary to eliminate delays.
  • Utilizes auxiliary equipment when necessary.
  • Applies product with proper identification marking when necessary.
  • Supplies lift truck with fuel, oil, and coolant as needed and completes daily lift truck checklist.
  • Passes all lift truck testing as required to be a licensed Lift Truck Operator in Machine Shop 1.
  • Performs all other miscellaneous duties as assigned by Supervision.

LIFT TRUCK OPERATOR - WHEELS 

JOB DUTIES

  • Requires no Supervision except occasional work instructions.
  • Performs all operations in a safe manner while providing proper care for the equipment, machine(s), and product.
  • Operates equipment as efficiently as possible to maximize productivity across all product types while maintaining safe work procedures and quality specifications provided by the company.
  • Maintains good housekeeping of the assigned work area and company property.
  • Follows production planning as assigned by Supervision.
  • Inspects and lubricates equipment prior and during operation to verify they are in proper working condition.
  • Notifies Supervision when equipment/machine(s) require repair or adjustments and assists with such as necessary.
  • Makes minor changes and adjustments to the equipment as necessary.
  • Possesses thorough knowledge of the equipment’s mechanical, hydraulic, and control technologies to properly operate the equipment.
  • Operates a lift truck in Machine Shop 1 to lift, transport, and sort materials, product, and equipment throughout the shop to prevent unnecessary delays.
  • Possesses thorough knowledge of the shop, products, and identification marks to maintain organization throughout the shop.
  • Utilizes auxiliary equipment when necessary.
  • Applies product with proper identification marking when necessary.
  • Supplies lift truck with fuel, oil, and coolant as needed and completes daily lift truck checklist.
  • Passes all lift truck testing as required to be a licensed Lift Truck Operator in Machine Shop 1.
  • Performs all other miscellaneous duties as assigned by Supervision.

POSITION SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2 – 3 years forklift experience required.

CHECKER - HANDLER - GRINDER

JOB DUTIES

  • Requires no Supervision except occasional work instructions.
  • Performs all operations in a safe manner while providing proper care for the equipment, machine(s), and product.
  • Operates equipment as efficiently as possible to maximize productivity across all product types while maintaining safe work procedures and quality specifications provided by the company.
  • Maintains good housekeeping of the assigned work area and company property.
  • Follows production planning as assigned by Supervision.
  • Inspects and lubricates equipment prior and during operation to verify they are in proper working condition.
  • Notifies Supervision when equipment/machine(s) require repair or adjustments and assists with such as necessary.
  • Adjusts equipment and machine(s) for various size products and verifies product meets quality specifications after adjustments.
  • Makes minor changes and adjustments to the equipment and machine(s) as necessary.
  • Possesses thorough knowledge of the equipment and machine(s) mechanical, hydraulic, and control technologies to properly operate the equipment and machine(s).
  • Utilizes computer technology to build shipment loads in Machine Shop 1 by inserting, segregating, verifying, and removing product specifications according to customer requirements.
  • Checks, marks, labels, stencils, and stamps product according to customer requirements to prepare for shipping operations.
  • Possesses thorough knowledge of the shop, products, and identification marks to maintain organization throughout the shop.
  • Operates an overhead crane in Machine Shop 1 to transport and position products, equipment, material, and other miscellaneous items necessary for daily operation.
  • Operates hand grinder to perform grinding/buffing on product as necessary.
  • Utilizes auxiliary equipment when necessary.
  • Greases finished hubs and installs protective pads on finished counter turn wheels.
  • Applies product with proper identification marking when necessary.
  • Passes all crane testing as required to be a licensed Crane Operator in Machine Shop 1.
  • Performs all other miscellaneous duties as assigned by Supervision.

POSITION SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • General computer skills required.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR ALL POSITIONS:

  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Must be available to work all three shifts, including weekends and overtime.
  • Must demonstrate self-motivation and problem-solving in a fast-paced setting
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks at one time.
