Job Summary

  • Construct and repair production machines and parts, working from prints, sketches, and/or damaged parts, maintaining close tolerances, dismantling and assembling machines, as necessary.
  • Selecting, setting up, and operating various metalworking machines using precision measuring and gauging equipment.
  • Machining parts from prints or sketches.
  • Emergency production tooling as required.
  • Gauging, bearing disassembly not involving normal assembly equipment.
  • Will be required to join local UAW union. 

Skilled trades will train employees outside classification by mutual agreement between the union and company based on business needs. Journeymen will train other journeymen and apprentices.

Physical Demands

Stooping, climbing, lifting, walking, using hoists, rollers, hand trucks, climbing up and down ladders, aerial platforms, accessing confined spaces, etc.

Working Conditions: Inside and outside, etc.

 

Uncontrollable Hazards: Surface cuts possible while handling parts and equipment.

 

Safety of Others: Standard. Pertinent safety equipment (i.e. hearing protection, safety glasses, gloves, respiratory protection, etc.).

Working Procedure

  • Receive assignment from supervisor stating machine, machine location and diagnosed trouble; secure manufacturer's print and/or engineering sketch or drawing pertaining to machine construction and alterations.
  • Remove defective or worn parts at machine location or disassemble machine in Machine Shop when general overhaul is indicated with assistance of helper as assigned.
  • Repair/replace internal components related to Heat Treat Furnace equipment, including internal and external load/unload systems and internal cell maintenance/repair.
  • Determine, with assistance of supervisor, extent of repair required to place machine in first-class operating condition; decide whether parts are to be repaired or replaced.
  • Secure required material per requisitions from supervisor; secure fixtures and tools required to set up metalworking machines to machine new parts and/or repair worn parts to specifications according to prescribed methods.
  • Form and sharpen tools required to process parts according to specified requirements.
  • Work with engineering and operators to set speeds and feeds according to size and type of material, operation to be performed, stock to be removed and finish requirement.
  • Position tools in holders, work in fixture, start machine and engage feed or manually feed tool to work.
  • Measure dimensions of work at intervals to ensure metal is being removed according to specified dimensions and tolerances using varied measuring devices.
  • Reassemble machine and test repair accuracy by observing starting, running and stopping cycles.
  • Removal, repair and/or replacement of machine-mounted pumps.
  • Make and install special equipment or arrange special adaptations in production machines per instructions and according to specifications prepared by the Engineering Department.
  • Perform electric arc welding (MIG, TIG, Stick), plumbing, etc., as part of machine repair/modification.
  • Work in conjunction with outside machine repair technicians to resolve machine issues.
  • Clean and lubricate machines after each use.
  • Hand scrape machine ways.
  • Clean and maintain personal work areas as well as the department.
  • Other duties as assigned.

May be required to support other initiatives as follows:

  • Driver of lean manufacturing initiatives (pillars) and a leader of cultural change.
