What are the main duties of a machine shop assistant?

A Machine Shop Assistant supports machinists and technicians by preparing materials, operating basic machinery, cleaning and maintaining equipment, and organizing the workspace. They often assist with loading and unloading materials, measuring parts, and ensuring that tools and machines are in good working order. These assistants play a vital role in keeping the shop running smoothly and efficiently, often performing routine tasks so skilled machinists can focus on more complex work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machine shop assistant?

To thrive as a Machine Shop Assistant, you need a basic understanding of machining processes, mechanical aptitude, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. PIRTEK, the nation’s leading provider for on-site hydraulic and industrial hose replacement is hiring for the position of Shop Assistant.
Job Description:

PIRTEK is looking to hire a Shop Assistant to assist in various capacities at the service center location. We are looking for applicants with excellent communication and strong customer service skills. If you are mechanically inclined, enjoy meeting and working with customers, PIRTEK could be an excellent career path.
Build the assembly. Keep the shop running.

Every hose our mobile technicians install starts somewhere. A lot of them start at your bench.
You build assemblies for walk-in customers, you keep the vans stocked so our field technicians never show up short, and you are the first person a customer sees when they walk through the door with a blown hose and a machine sitting idle.
What it pays

$19.00 – $23.00 per hour depending on experience, plus overtime at time and a half and a monthly bonus based on shop revenue.
  • Monday through Friday. No on-call, no nights, no weekends.
  • You know what your week looks like before it starts.

What you will do

  • Measure, cut, crimp, and build hydraulic and industrial hose assemblies at the bench
  • Identify the right replacement from a customer's sample or specification
  • Greet walk-in customers, answer the phone, write up service tickets and take payment
  • Keep inventory organized and accurate, and restock the service vans so the field crew is never short
  • Receive inbound shipments and handle local deliveries and pickups
  • Keep the shop, tools, and equipment clean, organized, and in working order
  • Help with shop setup and van upfitting as we grow
  • Deliveries and Pickups
  • Cleaning & Organizing
    • Maintain product inventory in an organized fashion
    • Maintain shop organization and cleanliness
  • Customer Service
    • Greet customers and answer phones
    • Write invoices and take customer payments
  • Assist with special projects: vehicle upfitting, shop setup, etc.

Why this job matters here

We are an emergency service business. When a technician gets a call at eleven at night, whether that customer's problem gets solved depends on whether the right fitting was on the van. That is your work.
It is also a real trade. You will be trained and certified on PIRTEK equipment, and hose assembly is a skill you keep.
What we are looking for

  • Mechanically inclined — auto, off-road, equipment, or machinery repair experience is what we are after
  • Comfortable with customers, on the phone and at the counter
  • Organized. Inventory accuracy is most of this job.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds and be on your feet
  • Able to read a tape measure
  • Valid driver's license and a clean driving record
  • High school diploma or GED
Hydraulic experience is not required. We will train you.

What else you get

  • PIRTEK certified training — paid, and yours to keep
  • Uniforms provided
  • Paid time off — one week your first year, two weeks after that — plus six paid holidays
  • Health benefit: we put $400 a month, tax-free, toward the health plan you pick — worth more than $400 of wages, because it never gets taxed. You own the plan, so you keep it if you ever leave here. We help you enroll.
  • Dental and vision — employer-paid group coverage
  • A path forward. Shop technicians who want to move into a mobile service van, or into operations, get first look.

About us

PIRTEK Marion is locally owned and operated, opening our Delaware service center this fall. You would be one of our first hires — training starts in October, ahead of opening.
We are backed by a national franchise network, which means real training and real standards without working for a faceless company. The owner answers the phone.
