They work under the supervision of experienced machinists to gain hands-on experience in tasks such as measuring, cutting, shaping, and assembling metal parts. Apprentices are also trained in safety procedures, blueprint reading, and the use of various machines like lathes, mills, and grinders. Over time, they develop the technical skills needed to become a fully qualified machinist.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Machine Shop Apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machine Shop Apprentice, you need a strong understanding of basic machining principles, mechanical aptitude, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with manual and CNC machines, measurement tools like calipers and micrometers, and safety certifications such as OSHA are typically required. Attention to detail, willingness to learn, and good communication skills help apprentices excel in collaborative and precision-focused environments. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring safety, product quality, and effective learning and contribution in a machine shop setting.

What are some common challenges faced by a Machine Shop Apprentice during their first year?

As a Machine Shop Apprentice, one of the main challenges you may encounter in your first year is adapting to the precision and attention to detail required when operating machinery and reading technical blueprints. You'll also need to quickly learn safety protocols and proper tool handling to prevent accidents. Working as part of a skilled team, you'll be expected to communicate effectively and ask questions when unsure, which is vital for both learning and maintaining workflow efficiency. Overcoming the initial learning curve with new equipment and terminology is common, but mentorship from experienced machinists can help you progress steadily.

Salary: $18.00 Upon Contract

The apprenticeship role is designed as a time-limited contract opportunity, with a maximum duration of three years.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Fleet Mechanic Apprentice: The Future of Mobility Starts Here

We don't just fix trucks; we keep our city moving. We are looking for a Fleet Mechanic Apprentice who is ready to bridge the gap between traditional wrench-turning and high-tech diagnostics. If you have a passion for internal combustion, a curiosity for complex networks, and the drive to learn from the best, this is your starting line.

Under the guidance of our Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, you'll tackle everything from light-duty cruisers to heavy-duty fire apparatus, evolving from a "pre-intermediate" tech into a master of the shop.

What You'll Do (The Mission)

  • Decode the Machine: Move beyond basic parts swapping. You'll troubleshoot electronic engines, HVAC, and hydraulic systems using the latest diagnostic software.
  • The Bread & Butter: Master the art of preventative maintenance-oil, filters, fluids, and rotations-ensuring our fleet stays reliable and safe.
  • Fabricate & Fix: Utilize welding, pneumatic tools, and specialty equipment to solve unique mechanical puzzles.
  • Own Your Space: Maintain a workspace that reflects your professional standards-clean, organized, and safe.

What You Bring (The Essentials)

  • Foundation: A High School diploma or GED and a baseline comfort level with automotive maintenance.
  • The Driver's Seat: A valid Driver's License and the ability to obtain a Forklift certification (we'll help you get there).
  • Tech-Savvy: You're as comfortable with a laptop as you are with a socket wrench. You can read manuals, follow digital diagrams, and track your work in our maintenance software.
  • Grit & Growth: You have the "apprentice mindset"-you listen, you ask questions, and you're constantly looking to improve your skills.

Why This Role?

You will be a vital part of a team that maintains cars, vans, SUVs, marine apparatus, and trailers. You'll be mentored by Equipment Mechanic IIs, gaining the high-level skills needed for a long-term career in fleet diagnostics and repair.
