What is a machine safety engineer?

Machine Safety Engineers are professionals who specialize in ensuring that machinery and industrial equipment operate safely and comply with relevant safety standards and regulations. They assess risks, design and implement safety systems, and conduct inspections and audits to prevent accidents and injuries in the workplace. Their work often involves collaborating with design, maintenance, and operations teams to identify potential hazards and develop solutions that minimize risk while maintaining productivity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machine safety engineer?

To thrive as a Machine Safety Engineer, you need expertise in engineering principles, risk assessment, and safety standards such as ISO 13849 or IEC 62061, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with safety analysis tools, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and certifications like TÜV Functional Safety Engineer is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are crucial for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and ensuring compliance. These skills and qualifications are essential for designing safe machinery, preventing workplace accidents, and meeting regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by machine safety engineers when implementing new safety protocols in manufacturing environments?

Machine Safety Engineers often encounter challenges such as resistance to change from operators, integrating safety solutions with legacy machinery, and ensuring compliance with ever-evolving safety regulations. Balancing productivity goals with rigorous safety standards can require creative problem-solving and strong communication skills. Collaborating with production teams, maintenance staff, and management is key to successfully implementing new protocols, as it helps ensure buy-in and proper training across all levels.

In this role, you will help ensuring that safety is an integral part of our product design, from early concept through industrialization and global market release. You will work closely with system architects, hardware, software, and mechanical / electrical engineers in our R&D, as well as with external certification bodies, and act as a technical authority for product safety and regulatory compliance. The position is ideal for someone with compliance experience who wants to develop further within product safety and functional safety.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
  • Act as product safety and compliance contributor within R&D projects, ensuring safety principles are embedded in system architecture and detailed design.
  • Participate in risk assessments and safety analyses (e.g. hazard analysis, risk reduction measures) for complex electromechanical and automated systems.
  • Interpret and apply international product safety standards and regulations (CE, EN, IEC, ISO, NRTL) in practical engineering context.
  • Provide hands‑on technical guidance to engineering teams during development, design reviews, and change management.
  • Contribute to the product safety and compliance strategy across the product lifecycle, including development, verification, and market access.
  • Interface with external test laboratories, notified bodies, and authorities to secure approvals and certifications.
  • Support Product Management, Sales, and Operations with expert input on safety and regulatory matters for global market access.
Key Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of experience as an engineer in product development, system engineering, or safety‑critical design within manufacturing, machinery, automation, or industrial equipment.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in product compliance, with solid knowledge of CE conformity assessment procedure within the EU; experience with other markets is an advantage.
  • Relevant higher education or equivalent experience in electrical/electronics, machinery, software engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Solid technical background in electrical, mechanical, systems, or software engineering.
  • Experience performing risk assessments and contributing to safety concept development for complex products.
  • Ability to translate regulatory requirements into robust, engineer‑friendly design solutions.
  • Experience in Global Market Access for machinery and electrical equipment; familiarity with Chemical/Material Compliance is an advantage.
We Offer:

AutoStore believes in taking care of employees and is dedicated to providing a supportive and rewarding work environment. Join us in our mission to store and move things for everyone, everywhere.

  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental, and Vision plans
  • Health Savings Account (HSA) with a company contribution
  • Generous Paid Time Off including 12 holidays, paid exercise time, paid volunteer time, and paid parental leave plans for all new parents
  • Retirement 401(k) plan with employer match and discretionary profit sharing contribution
  • Educational assistance and professional development programs, including mentorship/coaching programs with external industry leaders
  • Additional benefits include Group Life Insurance, Voluntary Additional Life Insurance, Disability Insurance, Employee Assistance programs, and more!

AutoStore is an Equal Opportunity Employer that does not discriminate on the basis of actual or perceived race, color, creed, religion, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, age, sex or gender (including pregnancy, childbirth, pregnancy‑related conditions, and lactation), gender identity or expression (including transgender status), sexual orientation, marital status, military service and veteran status, physical or mental disability, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by applicable federal, state, or local laws and ordinances.
