What Does a Machine Learning Intern Do?

A machine learning intern works in the field of data science. During an internship, you work alongside machine learning engineers who are developing artificial intelligence programs. They do this by writing computer code that allows a software system to run autonomously. Your exact responsibilities depend on the type and level of engineering that the company does. While you likely do not have coding duties, you may help the programmers test or debug their code. You may also work with algorithms and the mathematical aspects of artificial intelligence. A machine learning intern works under the supervision of a lead engineer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Machine Learning Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machine Learning Intern, you need a solid understanding of statistics, programming (especially Python), and foundational machine learning concepts, typically supported by coursework or a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, and data analysis libraries, as well as experience with version control systems like Git, is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, curiosity, and effective communication set outstanding candidates apart in this role. These abilities are essential for analyzing data, building models, and collaborating with teams to develop innovative AI solutions.

What types of projects do Machine Learning Interns typically work on, and how are they supported by the team?

Machine Learning Interns often contribute to real-world projects such as data preprocessing, developing and testing models, or assisting with research for new algorithms. Interns are usually paired with a mentor or work within a small team, receiving guidance during code reviews and regular check-ins. This collaborative environment helps interns gain practical experience, quickly overcome challenges, and integrate feedback, ensuring a steep learning curve and valuable industry exposure.

What is the difference between Machine Learning Intern vs Data Science Intern?

AspectMachine Learning InternData Science Intern

Reveleer is a healthcare data and analytics company that uses Artificial Intelligence to give health plans across all business lines greater control over their Quality Improvement, Risk Adjustment, and Member Management programs. With one transformative solution, the Reveleer platform enables plans to independently execute and manage every aspect of enrollment, provider outreach and data retrieval, coding, abstraction, reporting, and submissions. Leveraging proprietary technology, robust data sets, and subject matter expertise, Reveleer provides complete record retrieval and review services so health plans can confidently plan and execute risk, quality, and member management programs to deliver more value and improved outcomes.
Role Overview:
Reveleer partners with health plans to power value-based care and risk adjustment programs through advanced analytics, technology, and clinical expertise. Our work ensures accurate documentation, improved patient outcomes, and more efficient healthcare operations.
Reveleer's Applied Analytics Internship Program is designed as a two-summer experience designed for high-potential undergraduate students interested in healthcare analytics, operations, and artificial intelligence.
This program provides hands-on exposure to both operational workflows and advanced analytics, with a focus on developing and testing AI-driven solutions to improve medical record retrieval processes, which is one of the most critical components of risk adjustment.
Details:
Summer 1: Operations + Applied Experimentation
Interns will be embedded within the Medical Record Retrieval team, where they will:
Learn end-to-end retrieval operations and workflows
Participate directly in retrieval activities to build domain expertise
Collaborate with the Applied Analytics team on experimental AI initiatives
Test and evaluate AI tools designed to improve retrieval efficiency
Help define and track key performance metrics (e.g., turnaround time, yield, accuracy)
Document findings and contribute to process improvement recommendations
Summer 2: Analytics + AI Development
Returning interns will transition into the Applied Analytics team, where they will:
Build and maintain data pipelines supporting retrieval and analytics workflows
Develop and refine algorithms and AI tools to optimize retrieval processes
Analyze large healthcare datasets to identify trends and improvement opportunities
Design experiments to measure the impact of AI-driven interventions
Present insights and recommendations to cross-functional stakeholders
What You'll Gain
  • Deep exposure to healthcare data, risk adjustment, and value-based care
  • Hands-on experience applying AI/ML concepts to real-world operational problems

  • Mentorship from experienced analytics and operations professionals
  • Opportunity to return for a second summer with expanded technical ownership

Preferred Qualifications (Ideal Candidates)
  • Experience with data analysis tools (Python, R, SQL, or similar)
  • Familiarity with Excel or data manipulation techniques
  • Exposure to statistics, experimentation, or basic machine learning concepts
  • Ability to translate ambiguous problems into structured analyses
  • Curiosity about how operational processes work and how to improve them
  • Interest in applied AI (not just theory, but someone who wants to build and test things)
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to engage in hands-on operational work
  • Self-starter mindset with a willingness to take initiative and learn quickly

Compensation:
Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. Pay is based on several factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
