What is the difference between Machine Learning Co Op vs Data Scientist?

AspectMachine Learning Co OpData Scientist
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing a degree in CS, Data Science, or related fields; internships often preferredUsually holds a bachelor's or master's in Data Science, Statistics, or related fields; advanced certifications beneficial
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, often part-time or seasonal, in tech or research companiesFull-time role in various industries, including tech, finance, healthcare, with collaborative teams
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by companies for training and evaluating potential future employees; common in tech and research sectorsHired for analyzing data, building models, and deriving insights; prevalent across multiple industries

While both roles involve working with data and algorithms, a Machine Learning Co Op is typically an internship aimed at gaining experience, whereas a Data Scientist is a full-time professional responsible for developing and deploying data models. The Co Op provides a stepping stone into the field, often leading to a full-time Data Scientist position.

What types of projects do Machine Learning Co-Op students typically work on, and how do they contribute to the team?

Machine Learning Co-Op students often work on a variety of hands-on projects, such as developing data preprocessing pipelines, training and evaluating machine learning models, or supporting ongoing research initiatives. They commonly collaborate with data scientists, engineers, and other interns, contributing fresh perspectives and technical support. Co-Ops may also participate in code reviews, attend team meetings, and present their findings, making them valuable contributors to both experimental and production-level work. This collaborative environment offers plenty of opportunities to learn from experienced professionals while making a real impact on projects.

What is a Machine Learning Co-Op?

A Machine Learning Co-Op is a temporary, paid position that allows students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience working with machine learning technologies in a professional setting. Co-ops typically last several months and are designed to provide practical exposure to real-world projects, such as building models, analyzing data, and collaborating with data scientists or engineers. This role helps participants develop technical skills, gain industry insights, and build a professional network, which can be valuable for future career opportunities in the field of artificial intelligence or data science.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Machine Learning Co Op, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machine Learning Co Op, you need strong programming skills (especially in Python), a solid foundation in mathematics and statistics, and coursework or experience in data science or machine learning. Familiarity with tools and frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, and version control systems such as Git is typically expected. Excellent problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication help set you apart in collaborative and fast-paced environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for successfully contributing to real-world projects and advancing your expertise in the field.

Job description

Employment Type: Co-op / Internship (Full-time during co-op term)

Compensation: Paid co-op position;

compensation details shared during the interview process

Term: Fall 2026 co-op - start late August/early September 2026, approximately 15-16 weeks through mid-December 2026. Flexible/rolling start available for candidates able to begin sooner. Multi-term extension possible based on performance and academic schedule; all dates coordinated with your university's co-op calendar.

ABOUT THE ROLE

--------------

EliteUS is hiring an AI/ML Engineering Co-op to work alongside our engineering team on real, shipping projects - not busy work. You'll contribute to AI-powered features end to end: building and evaluating models, wiring up LLM/GenAI workflows, and turning prototypes into production-ready components. This is a hands-on, mentored role designed to give undergraduate students substantive engineering experience that counts toward their co-op or experiential-learning requirements.

This co-op is designed for undergraduate students and recent Bachelor's graduates in computing and data fields.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

--------------

- Build, fine-tune, and evaluate machine learning models for production use cases

- Develop LLM/GenAI application components (prompt design, retrieval pipelines, API integration)

- Write clean, tested Python and contribute to existing code base

- Help build data pipelines: collection, cleaning, labeling, and feature engineering

- Run experiments, measure results, and document findings clearly

- Collaborate with engineers and product stakeholders in daily standup and reviews

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

-----------------------

- Currently enrolled in, or recently completed, a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, AI/ML, Software Engineering, or a closely related field

- Strong academic record - minimum 3.5 GPA (4.0 scale) or equivalent

- Solid programming fundamentals in Python

- Coursework or project experience in machine learning, statistics, or data structures

- Ability to work on-site at our Edison, NJ location for the full co-op term

- Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without the need for current or future visa sponsorship

PREFERRED (NICE TO HAVE)

------------------------

- Personal, academic, or hackathon projects involving ML, data, or LLM tools

- Familiarity with PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, or Hugging Face

- Exposure to Git, REST APIs, SQL, or cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure)

- Strong written communication - you can explain what you built and why

WHAT YOU'LL GAIN

----------------

- Direct mentorship from working engineers and structured feedback throughout the term

- Ownership of real deliverables you can show in interviews and your portfolio

- Experience across the full AI/ML lifecycle, from data to deployment

- We work with university co-op coordinators and will complete mid-term and final evaluations, learning agreements, and any documentation your program requires

PATH TO FULL-TIME

-----------------

This co-op is designed as a pipeline to full-time employment. You'll receive a mid-term check-in and a formal end-of-term performance review. Strong performers will be offered a full-time Junior AI Engineer role at the conclusion of the term - timed so enrolled students can accept before graduation. We communicate the hire/no-hire decision clearly within the final weeks of the term so you always know where you stand.

HOW TO APPLY

------------

Submit your resume and a brief note on a project you're proud of. Include your school, expected graduation date, and available co-op term(s). Portfolio, GitHub, or project links are welcome.
