What is a machine control system?

A machine control system is used in jobs like machine control operators to automate and manage heavy equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, and cranes. These systems utilize sensors, controllers, and software to ensure precise operation, improve safety, and increase efficiency on construction or mining sites. Familiarity with control software and safety protocols is often required for these roles.

What is the difference between Machine Control vs Equipment Operator?

AspectMachine ControlEquipment Operator
CertificationsOSHA safety training, equipment-specific certificationsOSHA safety training, equipment-specific certifications
Work EnvironmentConstruction sites, mining, heavy constructionConstruction sites, manufacturing, agriculture
Job RoleProgram and operate machinery with advanced control systemsOperate machinery manually or semi-automatically
Industry UsageHeavy construction, civil engineeringConstruction, manufacturing, agriculture

Machine Control specialists focus on programming and operating advanced machinery with GPS and automation systems, while Equipment Operators handle manual operation of various machinery. Both roles require safety certifications and are vital in construction and heavy industry sectors, but Machine Control roles emphasize technology and precision, whereas Equipment Operators focus on manual skills.

Job description

Pay: $40.00 - $48.00 per hour
Job description:
4-Axis CNC Machining | Complex 3D Work | Mastercam / CAM Programming | Renishaw Probing
Location: Elk Grove, CA
Job Type: Full-Time | On-Site
Pay Range: $40.00 - $48.00 per hour (DOE)
Primary Machine: Doosan NHP 8000 Horizontal Machining Center | 4-Axis (B-Axis Rotary) | Pallet Changer
PLEASE READ BEFORE APPLYING (Important)
This is not a production operator role and not a "run existing programs" position.
If your experience is primarily:
  • CNC operation without programming responsibility
  • 3-axis VMC work only
  • High-volume or repetitive production machining

This position is not a fit.
This role is for a Senior Machinist (Machinist III) who can program, set up, and machine complex 3D parts on a 4-axis horizontal machining center, and who has hands-on experience with Renishaw probing, including creating and modifying probing routines and subroutines/macros.
Applicants without CAM programming + 4-axis experience + probing capability will be screened out.
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled 4-Axis CNC Programmer/Machinist to support complex, high-value machining work requiring strong process ownership, advanced setup strategy, and in-process probing/verification.
This role is centered on a Doosan NHP 8000 horizontal machining center with pallet changing and a B-axis rotary table. The successful candidate will own jobs end-to-end - CAM programming → fixturing → setup → probing → machining → inspection → optimization - in a custom, non-production environment.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE (Non-Negotiable)
Your resume must clearly demonstrate most of the following:
CNC Programming (Required)
  • Mastercam (preferred) or comparable CAM software (NX, Fusion, PowerMill, etc.)
  • Creation and optimization of 3D toolpaths for complex geometry
  • Experience programming 4-axis machining using B-axis rotation
  • Ability to post, prove out, and safely run new programs
  • Solid understanding of work offsets, tool control, and collision avoidance

4-Axis / Complex 3D Machining (Required)
  • Hands-on experience machining complex 3D parts on horizontal machining centers
  • Effective use of 4-axis positioning (B-axis) to access multiple faces and reduce setups
  • Ability to hold tight tolerances and produce high-quality surface finishes
  • Advanced blueprint reading and GD&T

Renishaw Probing + Routine Programming (Required)
  • Hands-on use of Renishaw probing systems for:
  • part pickup and alignment
  • work offset setting and updating
  • bore/boss location verification
  • in-process inspection and verification checks
  • Ability to create and edit probing routines
  • Experience writing or modifying probe subroutines/macros to improve repeatability and reduce setup time

Workholding & Process Ownership (Required)
  • Experience designing and building custom fixtures
  • Comfortable owning jobs independently from programming through completion
  • Horizontal machining experience strongly preferred
  • Experience using pallet-changing machines a plus

If your resume does not clearly show CAM programming, 4-axis machining, and Renishaw probing experience, please do not apply.
Key Responsibilities
CNC Programming & 4-Axis Machining
  • Program and optimize parts using Mastercam or equivalent CAM software
  • Machine complex parts using 4-axis positioning on a horizontal machining center
  • Develop efficient machining strategies to reduce setups and improve accuracy
  • Prove out programs and optimize feeds, speeds, and toolpaths
  • Generate tooling strategies appropriate for complex geometry

Renishaw Probing & Automation
  • Use Renishaw probing for setup, alignment, and verification
  • Write and modify probing routines and subroutines/macros for:
  • automated setup routines
  • work offset updates
  • feature verification and inspection checkpoints
  • Adjust machining strategy based on probing and inspection results

Fixturing & Setup Strategy
  • Design and build fixtures for rigidity, accuracy, and repeatability
  • Plan setups to minimize part handling and eliminate secondary operations
  • Manage deflection, distortion, and access challenges through smart workholding

Troubleshooting & Optimization
  • Diagnose and correct chatter, surface finish issues, tool wear, and alignment problems
  • Modify programs and processes based on inspection data
  • Improve repeatability, first-article success, and cycle efficiency

Senior-Level Expectations
  • Serve as a technical resource for CNC machining and probing practices
  • Support continuous improvement in CAM workflows and shop standards
  • Provide input on tooling and cutter selection for upcoming work

Compensation (Indeed-Optimized)
Pay Range: $40.00 - $48.00 per hour (DOE)
Final hourly rate is based on demonstrated:
  • CAM programming depth
  • 4-axis machining experience
  • Renishaw probing and routine/subroutine proficiency
  • Ability to independently manage complex jobs

How to Apply (Required Resume Details)
To be considered, your resume must clearly include:
  • CAM software used (Mastercam or equivalent)
  • Description of 4-axis machining experience
  • Examples of complex 3D parts you've programmed and machined
  • Renishaw probing experience and what it was used for
  • Whether you've written or edited probe routines/subroutines/macros
  • Machine types operated (horizontal machining centers preferred)
