OVERVIEW:

The Machinist is responsible for operating manual machining equipment and CNC machinery to perform precision machining, repair, and manufacturing tasks in support of service and repair operations. This role supports operational performance by machining new and existing components to engineering specifications while maintaining high standards for safety, quality, and productivity. The Machinist interprets engineering drawings, applies sound machining practices, and performs dimensional verification to ensure work meets production and quality requirements. This position works closely with technicians, supervisors, and operations personnel to support customer deliverables and shop performance.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operates manual machining equipment and CNC machinery to manufacture and repair components
  • Machines raw material, castings, shafts, and existing components to engineering specifications
  • Interprets engineering drawings, GD&T, machining symbols, and tolerances accurately
  • Performs dimensional inspections using micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, height gauges, and related precision instruments
  • Calculates speeds, feeds, tooling requirements, and machining offsets based on material and equipment capabilities
  • Applies shop math, trigonometry, and geometric calculations to machining operations and setups
  • Performs repair machining, reconditioning, and modification of existing parts and assemblies
  • Uses drills, grinders, mills, lathes, saws, cranes, and other shop equipment safely and effectively
  • Rigs, lifts, and maneuvers components and castings using approved lifting practices
  • Monitors tooling condition and replaces worn or damaged tooling as required
  • Performs routine equipment checks and basic machine maintenance to support reliability and performance
  • Completes work instructions, ERP transactions, and inspection documentation accurately
  • Applies machining best practices related to thermal growth, material behavior, and machining deflection
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work environment in accordance with company policies and procedures
  • Trains and supports machinists, apprentices, and team members when assigned
  • Works overtime and adapts to changing priorities to support customer and operational demands

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:

  • Achieve machining quality and dimensional accuracy requirements
  • Support on-time completion of machining and repair work orders
  • Maintain compliance with company safety policies and procedures
  • Minimize scrap, rework, and machining errors through quality workmanship

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certification or associate degree in machining, manufacturing, or a related field preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years of machining experience in industrial, manufacturing, or repair environments preferred
  • Experience operating manual machining equipment and CNC machinery required
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, tolerances, and machining specifications
  • Experience machining castings, shafts, rotating equipment components, and various metals preferred
  • Experience using precision measuring instruments and inspection equipment required

SKILLS / COMPETENCIES:

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of machining principles and best practices
  • Proficiency with manual machining equipment, CNC machinery, and precision measurement tools
  • Ability to work in metric and imperial measurement systems
  • Knowledge of speeds, feeds, tooling applications, and machining calculations
  • Basic welding skills preferred
  • Strong analytical thinking, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities
  • Computer literacy with the ability to complete ERP transactions and electronic documentation
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills
  • Commitment to workplace safety, housekeeping, and continuous improvement

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Frequently:

  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, push, pull, and lift materials throughout the workday
  • Lift and move materials up to 70 lbs. within the physical abilities of the employee
  • Operate machining equipment, cranes, forklifts, and hand tools safely
  • Work in industrial shop environments around moving machinery and equipment

Occasionally:

  • Wear respiratory protection and additional PPE as required
  • Work overtime to support customer schedules and operational demands
  • Perform extended machining operations requiring repetitive movement and sustained focus
