Lung Bioengineering information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Lung Bioengineering Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive in Lung Bioengineering, you need a strong background in biomedical engineering, biology, and tissue engineering, typically supported by an advanced degree in a relevant field. Proficiency with laboratory techniques, cell culture systems, 3D bioprinting, and analytical software is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help drive innovation and collaboration. These competencies are crucial for advancing research, ensuring experimental accuracy, and translating scientific discoveries into clinical applications.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in lung bioengineering, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in lung bioengineering often encounter challenges related to the complexity of replicating the structure and function of lung tissue. Ensuring biocompatibility, maintaining cell viability, and achieving effective gas exchange are technical hurdles frequently faced in both research and production settings. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—including biomedical engineers, clinicians, and cell biologists—is crucial to address these issues. Proactive communication, staying updated with the latest research, and participating in cross-functional training can help team members overcome these challenges and contribute to innovative solutions.

What is lung bioengineering?

Lung bioengineering is a multidisciplinary field focused on developing, repairing, or replacing lung tissue or entire lungs using engineering principles, biology, and regenerative medicine. It involves techniques such as tissue engineering, 3D bioprinting, and stem cell research to create functional lung tissue for transplantation or disease modeling. The ultimate goal is to address the shortage of donor lungs and improve treatments for lung diseases by producing lab-grown or repaired lungs that can function in the human body.

What is the difference between Lung Bioengineering vs Pulmonary Research Scientist?

AspectLung BioengineeringPulmonary Research Scientist
Required CredentialsBiomedical engineering degree, lab experienceBiomedical or biological sciences degree, research experience
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, biotech companies, research institutionsResearch labs, academic institutions, hospitals
Industry UsageDeveloping lung tissue engineering, medical devicesStudying lung diseases, pathophysiology, drug testing

While both roles involve lung-related research, Lung Bioengineering focuses on developing engineered lung tissues and medical devices, often requiring engineering skills. Pulmonary Research Scientists primarily study lung diseases and physiology, emphasizing biological research. Both roles share laboratory environments and interdisciplinary collaboration but differ in their core objectives and technical expertise.

Job description

A healthier future. It's what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That's what makes us Genentech.

The Opportunity

A Postdoctoral Fellowship is available within the laboratory of Dr. Sharookh Kapadia in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Host-Microbe Interactions. We are seeking a highly motivated, independent scientist to spearhead research at the intersection of respiratory disease and microbial pathogenesis. The successful candidate will be part of the Genentech post-doctoral training program that provides an outstanding environment and the opportunity to pursue fundamental basic science questions in an environment focused on drug development and breakthrough discoveries. You will have the opportunity to productively collaborate with researchers across multiple departments, present your work to project teams, and contribute to scientic publications.

Research Focus

The Kapadia Lab is focused on two research efforts: (1) advancing novel antibacterial drug discovery and (2) identifying and characterizing novel therapeutic targets for acute/chronic respiratory diseases where infectious pathogens cause and/or exacerbate pathology (e.g., COPD, viral/bacterial pneumonia). This fellowship will specifically investigate host-pathogen interactions driving COPD pathophysiology and exacerbations. Your work will aim to uncover fundamental biological insights and use preclinical in vitro and in vivo models to define the causal roles of key pathways in disease progression.

Who You Are:

  • Ph.D. in immunology, microbiology or cellular/molecular biology

  • The ideal candidate should possess deep scientific and technical expertise in epithelial, endothelial, and/or myeloid biology. We value researchers who are eager to bridge the gap between understanding basic mechanisms and innovative therapeutic development.

  • Consistent track record of independently conducting laboratory experiments and advancing at least one key research project as evidenced by a first author paper published or accepted in a leading peer-reviewed journal.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience working with infectious agents (viruses, bacteria, fungi) and a solid foundation in innate/adaptive immunology and in vivo mouse work are highly desired.

  • Computational and lung biology experiences are preferred.
