What is lumber trading?

Lumber trading involves the buying and selling of various types of wood and wood products, typically in bulk, between producers (such as sawmills) and end users or distributors. Traders monitor market trends, negotiate prices, manage logistics, and ensure timely delivery of lumber to their clients. The job often requires knowledge of current market conditions, wood grading standards, and global supply chains. Lumber traders play a key role in regulating supply and demand in the wood products industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a lumber trader?

To thrive as a Lumber Trader, you need strong sales acumen, market analysis skills, and a solid understanding of lumber products and industry regulations, often supported by a degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with trading platforms, inventory management systems, and CRM software is typically required. These skills and qualities are crucial for navigating market fluctuations, maximizing profitability, and fostering long-term business relationships in the competitive lumber industry.

Physical Commodities Trader

McGill St Laurent

Montreal, QC • On-site

Full-time

Posted 15 days ago

Job description

At McGill St Laurent, we buy and sell physical lumber and agricultural products across North America. Want to know more? McGill St Laurent
This is not financial trading. This is hands-on commodity trading — buying, selling, negotiating, and executing real deals with real shipments.
In this role, you will build your own book of business by developing relationships with suppliers and customers, identifying opportunities, and closing transactions in a fast-paced market.
Deals can close in one day. Prices move daily. Shipments can take months.
You don’t just close deals — you own them from negotiation to final delivery.
Who We’re Looking For
You’re driven, competitive, and naturally entrepreneurial.
You like building relationships, closing deals, and figuring things out as you go. You’re comfortable picking up the phone, creating opportunities, and operating in fast-moving environments where no two days look the same.
Whether you come from sales, trading, logistics, or even a more unconventional background — what matters most is your ability to take ownership, move quickly, and deliver results.
If you’ve built something on your own, or thrived in competitive environments, you’ll likely fit right in.
What We’re Looking For
  • 2+ years of experience managing full B2B sales cycles
  • Strong negotiation and relationship-building skills
  • Comfortable working in short, fast-paced sales cycles
  • Ability to make decisions under pressure
  • Entrepreneurial mindset — you take ownership and act
  • Organized enough to manage both closing and follow-through
  • Bilingual (French & English)
  • Experience in commodities, distribution, logistics, construction materials, or agriculture is an asset

What’s in It for You
  • Uncapped commissions — your performance directly drives your earnings
  • Entrepreneurial culture — initiative and autonomy are encouraged
  • High-impact role — you own your deals from start to finish
  • Opportunity to grow in a dynamic, performance-driven environment
  • A beautiful office with a golf simulator, gym, lounge, locker rooms and showers

Why This Role Is Different
  • You build something of your own — your book of business
  • You operate in real markets, not theoretical ones
  • You see the full lifecycle of a deal, from sourcing to delivery
  • Your results are directly tied to your effort and decisions
This position requires 100% presence at the office. We believe that this presence encourages interactions that have a positive impact on our performance. In addition, it facilitates better collaboration, increases efficiency, and generates informal learning opportunities through these interactions. This collaborative culture creates a dynamic atmosphere in the office. As a result, we encourage employees to maintain this presence to reap the benefits.
