Job description

Job Summary: The Lumber Estimator quantifies the materials, labor, and equipment needed to complete a construction project. Determine how much and what type of lumber is required to complete a construction project based on its blueprints and other specifications. Work independently multitasking many diverse types of projects such as residential, commercial and agricultural. Responsible for all lumber take-offs associated with each project.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepares estimates for all lumber and lumber-related materials associated with the project.
  • Works with sales, purchasing, customers, general contractors, and designers to develop and present an accurate estimate of all lumber associated with the project.
  • Proposes new products and acquisitions in support of long-range corporate goals.
  • Assists in elimination of product when in the best interests of the company.
  • Researches markets, potential trends and incorporates relevant improvements into estimates.
  • Reviews available quote sheets and verifies customer requirements for specific projects; designs preliminary truss drawings.
  • Use CAD software to draw basic design layouts, elevations and package Use Excel and other software to prepare bids and quotations.
  • Coordinates estimates with salesmen to meet client deadlines and may be responsible to present bids to customers.
  • Plans and paces own work efficiency in order to meet daily, weekly, project, or team related productivity goals.
  • Reviews completed projects and analyzes/adjusts estimating process to improve profitability efforts.
  • Works with purchasing and inventory control staff to ensure usage of purchased materials is effective and timely. Incorporates aging materials as necessary to reduce inventory liabilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Qualifications:
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Minimum of two years of experience estimating residential, commercial or agricultural buildings, or estimating for a lumber yard. Two years framing experience may also be considered.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge/understanding of CAD helpful but not required.
  • Previous experience using BisTrack preferred.
  • Proficiency with estimating software, digital take-off tools, Microsoft Office, and spreadsheets.
  • Solid understanding of construction methods for residential or commercial projects.
  • Proficiency in mathematical computation in geometry methods.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
