Job description


Job Title: Explosives Engineer II

Department: Engineering 

Reports To: Director of Engineering

FLSA Status: Salary Exempt

 

SUMMARY

Will leverage their engineering knowledge and hands-on experience in the manufacturing of energetic materials to support quoting, product design, process development, and project management. The role focuses on the development of energetic materials and products, improving processes, and overseeing technical and testing requirements for large-scale defense programs. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience with energetic materials, preferably within the Aerospace or Defense industries, and a strong focus on safety, quality, and operational efficiency in a manufacturing environment.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Evaluate and improve manufacturing processes based on operator feedback, new/improved equipment, design changes, etc., targeting safety, quality, and reduced cost/waste.
  • Identify, specify, and oversee the purchase and integration of specialized equipment and tooling for manufacturing processes. Supervise the installation and commissioning of new equipment, ensuring seamless start-up and adherence to safety protocols
  • Be involved in the design of new explosive products from proof of concept, prototypes, testing, pilot scale, and scale-up to manufacturing. This may include developing and executing testing procedures for verification and validation of designs.
  • Individual will assist with the design and bringing to market of energetic devices, such as various munitions, shaped charges, LSC, flight termination systems, CAD/PAD, including mechanical design, part interface, prints, and system function
  • Manage both customer and internal programs, ensuring that all technical, schedule, and budgetary requirements are met.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, safety assessments, and process documentation. 
  • Collaborate with other departments to review technical requirements, participate in bid/no-bid decisions, and provide accurate quotes. This includes determining requirements for tooling, equipment, packaging, labor hours, and other resource estimates.

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS 

 Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in 3D solid modeling software (SolidWorks preferred); familiarity with AutoCAD 2D drafting is a plus.
  • Experience in CFD modeling is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); experience with Microsoft Project is a plus.
  • Ideal candidate must possess strong analytical skills and a desire to take a hands-on approach to solving complex engineering challenges in a manufacturing environment. Experience in troubleshooting and optimizing processes in energetics manufacturing is highly desirable.

Program Management:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with government or defense-related programs. Experience with aerospace qualification programs is preferred.
  • Experience with the requirements of RCC 319 is a plus
  • Self-starter with the ability to work individually and within a team, think outside of the box, maintain schedule and budget, and strictly adhere to safety and operating regulations.



EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:  Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Explosives, Mechanical, Aerospace, or related fields) & 5+ years of work experience required. 2+ years of direct experience in energetics preferred (explosives, propellants, etc.)
