What is an LPN surgical tech?

An LPN Surgical Tech is a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) who is trained to assist in surgical procedures by preparing operating rooms, sterilizing instruments, and handing tools to surgeons during operations. They combine nursing skills with surgical technology expertise to support surgical teams and ensure patient safety. Their duties may include monitoring patient vital signs, controlling infection risks, and assisting with post-operative care. This role requires specialized training in both nursing and surgical procedures, often obtained through additional certifications or workplace training. LPN Surgical Techs play a crucial role in maintaining efficiency and safety in operating rooms.

What are the typical responsibilities of an LPN surgical tech during a surgical procedure?

An LPN Surgical Tech assists with preparing the operating room, ensuring all instruments and equipment are sterile and ready for use. During surgery, they provide direct support to surgeons by passing instruments, maintaining the sterile field, and monitoring patient conditions. Post-procedure, they help with patient recovery, equipment cleanup, and updating patient records. This position works closely with surgeons, nurses, and anesthesia staff to ensure smooth and safe surgical operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the LPN surgical tech position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an LPN Surgical Tech, you need a practical nursing license (LPN), knowledge of surgical procedures, and hands-on experience with sterilization and patient care. Familiarity with surgical instruments, sterile field protocols, and common electronic health record (EHR) systems is essential, along with current BLS certification. Attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are valuable soft skills in this fast-paced environment. These abilities are critical for ensuring patient safety and supporting surgeons and the surgical team throughout procedures.

Can you work as a surgical tech as an LPN?

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) are not qualified to work as surgical technologists, as the roles require different certifications and training. Surgical techs typically complete specialized programs and certifications, while LPNs focus on patient care and basic nursing skills. However, LPNs may assist in perioperative settings under supervision, but they do not perform the technical tasks of a surgical technologist.
