What is the difference between an LPN and an RN?

LPN stands for Licensed Practical Nurse, while RN stands for Registered Nurse. RNs typically have more education and training than LPNs, which allows them to take on more responsibility, including administering certain medications, developing patient care plans, and supervising LPNs and other healthcare staff. LPNs usually provide basic patient care, such as monitoring vital signs and assisting with daily activities, under the supervision of RNs or doctors. The scope of practice for each role varies by state and employer, but RNs generally have a broader range of duties and a higher earning potential. Both roles are essential in healthcare settings and work closely together to ensure quality patient care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an LPN or RN?

To thrive as an LPN or RN, you need a solid grounding in clinical nursing practices, patient care, and medical terminology, typically supported by completion of an accredited nursing program and state licensure. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), medical equipment, and medication administration systems is routinely required. Excellent communication, compassion, and problem-solving abilities help nurses build rapport with patients and collaborate with healthcare teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering safe, effective patient care and adapting to the dynamic demands of healthcare environments.

How do LPN and RN roles typically collaborate within a healthcare team?

LPNs (Licensed Practical Nurses) and RNs (Registered Nurses) often work closely together, with RNs typically supervising LPNs and delegating certain tasks based on patient needs and facility protocols. LPNs usually provide basic patient care, such as taking vital signs or administering medications, while RNs handle more complex tasks like developing care plans and performing assessments. Strong communication and teamwork are essential as both roles coordinate with physicians, support staff, and each other to ensure high-quality patient care. This collaborative environment provides valuable learning opportunities and support for professional growth.

Job description

Registered Nurse (RN) - Full Time
Home Health
Flexible Schedule | Autonomy | One Patient at a Time | Make a Meaningful Difference Every Day
Are you an experienced Home Health RN looking for more flexibility, greater autonomy, and the opportunity to truly focus on your patients instead of the hospital pace?
At PurposeCare, we believe exceptional patient care starts with exceptional clinicians.
As one of the Midwest's fastest-growing providers of Home Health and Home Care services, we're looking for compassionate Registered Nurses who enjoy building relationships, working independently, and helping patients safely recover in the comfort of their own homes.
If you're looking for a role where you're trusted as a clinical professional, supported by an experienced leadership team, and able to make a lasting impact on patients and families every day, we'd love to meet you.
Why Home Health?
Home Health offers something many nurses are searching for:
• More flexibility in your day
• Greater autonomy and independence
• One-on-one patient relationships
• The opportunity to see the direct impact of your care
• Variety in your day instead of caring for multiple patients simultaneously
• The ability to educate patients and families while helping prevent unnecessary hospitalizations
If you enjoy critical thinking, relationship building, and practicing nursing with greater independence, Home Health may be exactly what you're looking for.
What You'll Do
As a Home Health RN, you'll oversee a caseload of patients within your assigned territory while partnering with physicians, therapists, and interdisciplinary team members to deliver exceptional care.
Responsibilities include:
  • Complete comprehensive Start of Care, Resumption of Care, and Recertification assessments.
  • Develop individualized care plans that support patient goals and independence.
  • Coordinate care with physicians, therapists, social workers, and caregivers.
  • Educate patients and families on disease management, medications, and safety.
  • Complete timely documentation and OASIS assessments.
  • Monitor patient progress and adjust care plans as clinical needs change.
  • Supervise Home Health Aides and collaborate with LPNs as appropriate.
  • Participate in case conferences and interdisciplinary care planning.
  • Help improve patient outcomes while maintaining compliance with Medicare Conditions of Participation and agency quality standards.
What Makes PurposeCare Different?
At PurposeCare, our nurses are supported by dedicated teams focused on helping them provide exceptional patient care.
You'll partner with:
  • Clinical Leadership
  • Quality & Compliance
  • Intake & Scheduling
  • Therapy Services
  • Home Care Teams
  • Operations Leadership
We believe clinicians should be able to focus on what they do best-caring for patients.
We're Looking For
The ideal candidate has:
  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • Minimum of one year of recent Home Health experience
  • Strong knowledge of OASIS documentation and Medicare regulations
  • Excellent assessment and clinical decision-making skills
  • Outstanding communication and relationship-building abilities
  • Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and auto insurance
  • Passion for delivering patient-centered care in the home setting
Why Nurses Join PurposeCare
We know you have options.
Many of our nurses choose PurposeCare because they value:
  • A flexible work environment
  • Independence and autonomy
  • Supportive clinical leadership
  • Competitive compensation
  • Mileage reimbursement
  • Opportunities for professional growth
  • The ability to make a meaningful difference in patients' lives every day
