As a plastic surgery licensed practical nurse (LPN), you assist plastic surgery physicians, registered nurses (RNs), and patients before, during, and after cosmetic or reconstructive procedures. This means your duties include providing pre-operative care and education to patients, assisting during actual procedures, and providing care and post-operative instructions to recovering patients. As with all medical fields, patient confidentiality is legally protected, and you must adhere to HIPAA and all relevant federal and state guidelines when handling patient records. In addition to assisting with procedures and maintaining accurate records, you may stock and sterilize equipment, manage appointments, and interface with insurance companies for billing purposes.

What is an LPN plastic surgery?

An LPN in plastic surgery is a Licensed Practical Nurse specializing in assisting with cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. They provide pre- and post-operative care, monitor patient recovery, assist with minor in-office procedures, and educate patients on post-surgical care. They work closely with surgeons and healthcare teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes. This role requires knowledge of wound care, medication administration, and patient support in a surgical setting.

What are the typical daily responsibilities for an LPN working in a plastic surgery clinic?

As an LPN in plastic surgery, your daily responsibilities typically include conducting pre-operative assessments, assisting surgeons with minor procedures, monitoring patients’ vital signs, and providing detailed wound care instructions. You'll also manage patient documentation, prepare exam rooms, and support both patients and their families through the surgical process. Teamwork is important, as you will collaborate closely with surgeons, RNs, medical assistants, and administrative staff to ensure smooth patient flow. This role can provide a dynamic mix of hands-on patient care and administrative duties, offering valuable experience in a specialized and detail-oriented healthcare environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the LPN plastic surgery position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an LPN in plastic surgery, you need a valid LPN license, strong clinical skills in patient care, and knowledge of surgical procedures. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), wound care supplies, and pre- and post-operative protocols is essential. Compassion, attention to detail, and effective teamwork make someone stand out in this role. These skills ensure safe patient outcomes, efficient surgical workflows, and supportive care throughout the plastic surgery process.
