Lpc Internships information

What is an LPC internship?

LPC internships are supervised practical training experiences required for individuals pursuing licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). These internships provide graduate students or recent graduates with hands-on experience in counseling settings under the guidance of a licensed professional. Typically, LPC internships are part of a master's degree program in counseling or a related field and are necessary to fulfill state licensure requirements. During the internship, interns develop clinical skills, gain exposure to a variety of client populations, and learn to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings.

What types of supervision and support can I expect during an LPC internship?

During an LPC internship, you will typically receive regular supervision from a licensed professional counselor or supervisor, usually through weekly one-on-one or group meetings. Supervisors provide feedback on your clinical skills, case management, and professional development, helping you navigate challenging client situations and ethical considerations. You'll also likely participate in team meetings and collaborative case discussions, which foster learning and professional growth. This supportive environment is designed to help you build confidence and competence as you work toward full licensure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an LPC intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) Intern, a foundational understanding of counseling theories, assessment techniques, and ethical practice—usually supported by a relevant graduate degree and internship eligibility—is essential. Familiarity with case management systems, clinical documentation tools, and supervision protocols is typically required. Strong communication, empathy, and self-awareness help interns build rapport with clients and effectively integrate feedback from supervisors. These skills are crucial to developing clinical competence, ensuring client well-being, and meeting licensure requirements.

Residents and Supervisees receive structured caseload support, paid supervision, and opportunities to quickly build clinical hours toward LPC or LCSW licensure

Join Compass – Make a Meaningful Impact in Your Community

Compass NOVA is seeking passionate and dedicated mental health clinicians to join our Intensive In-Home (IIH) program. This position offers a comprehensive clinical experience ideal for those working toward licensure as a Resident in Counseling or Supervisee in Social Work.

At Compass, you’ll work alongside a supportive and collaborative team dedicated to helping children, adults, and families build stability, resilience, and stronger relationships. Our clinicians provide community-based mental health treatment to youth under 21 experiencing serious emotional or behavioral challenges, helping prevent out-of-home placements and strengthen family systems.

Clinicians also have opportunities to provide outpatient therapy and community-based services to adults and families, allowing you to develop a well-rounded clinical skill set.

What You’ll Do

As a Community-Based Mental Health Therapist, you will:

• Provide individual and family therapy in home and community settings
• Support youth and families in achieving treatment goals and improving functioning
• Engage caregivers, schools, and other treatment professionals to strengthen support systems
• Conduct assessments and develop individualized treatment plans
• Participate in regular clinical supervision and case consultation
• Maintain timely documentation in accordance with agency and state requirements
• Ensure clients have access to 24/7 crisis support when needed

Why Join Compass NOVA?

Compass is committed to supporting early-career clinicians and helping them grow into confident, highly skilled professionals. We provide strong supervision, mentorship, and training to help clinicians succeed while building hours toward licensure.

Typical clinicians work 20–30 hours per week, with opportunities to expand their caseload as desired. Residents and Supervisees have opportunities to build clinical hours toward licensure through community-based and outpatient services. This allows for a faster licensure process.

Schedule and Workload

Compass offers a flexible schedule where full-time status is achieved with approximately 105 hours per month (about 25 hours per week).

This reduced full-time requirement allows clinicians to maintain a strong work-life balance while still qualifying for full benefits.
