Lpc Internships information

What is an LPC internship?

LPC internships are supervised practical training experiences required for individuals pursuing licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). These internships provide graduate students or recent graduates with hands-on experience in counseling settings under the guidance of a licensed professional. Typically, LPC internships are part of a master's degree program in counseling or a related field and are necessary to fulfill state licensure requirements. During the internship, interns develop clinical skills, gain exposure to a variety of client populations, and learn to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings.

What types of supervision and support can I expect during an LPC internship?

During an LPC internship, you will typically receive regular supervision from a licensed professional counselor or supervisor, usually through weekly one-on-one or group meetings. Supervisors provide feedback on your clinical skills, case management, and professional development, helping you navigate challenging client situations and ethical considerations. You'll also likely participate in team meetings and collaborative case discussions, which foster learning and professional growth. This supportive environment is designed to help you build confidence and competence as you work toward full licensure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an LPC intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) Intern, a foundational understanding of counseling theories, assessment techniques, and ethical practice—usually supported by a relevant graduate degree and internship eligibility—is essential. Familiarity with case management systems, clinical documentation tools, and supervision protocols is typically required. Strong communication, empathy, and self-awareness help interns build rapport with clients and effectively integrate feedback from supervisors. These skills are crucial to developing clinical competence, ensuring client well-being, and meeting licensure requirements.

This position offers the flexibility of a fully remote work setting, enabling you to conduct therapy sessions in a comfortable and conducive environment. Although you will be working remotely, you will have access to our outpatient office resources and support. We encourage a collaborative approach, allowing for effective communication with colleagues and supervisors through various digital platforms.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct ongoing assessments to identify the unique needs of each patient and tailor your therapeutic approach accordingly.
  • Maintain clear communication with supervisors, direct care staff, family members, and other stakeholders to ensure effective care coordination and progress tracking.
  • Develop tentative schedules for appointments and home visits to balance caseload and ensure all clients receive the attention they require.
  • Coordinate in-home visits for comprehensive assessments, facilitating chart reviews, staff interviews, and data analysis as necessary.
  • Execute and monitor program plans to guarantee their effectiveness and adherence to best practices in mental health care.
  • Engage in Interdisciplinary Team Meetings and other relevant discussions to foster collaborative treatment planning.
  • Document and complete monthly and quarterly progress notes, accurately reflecting patient progress and interactions.
  • Organize and lead training sessions to ensure that team members are equipped with the skills to implement program plans effectively.
  • Provide follow-up visits and ongoing assessments to support the evolving needs of individuals under your care.
  • Maintain thorough record-keeping and documentation to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and accessibility of information.
  • Act as a liaison within the public and mental health communities to advocate for and enhance the development of mental health programs.
  • Assist in the creation of training materials aimed at improving therapeutic procedures and interventions for clients.
Patient Population / Client Focus

In this role, you will work with a varied clientele, including both youth and adults facing diverse mental health challenges. This dynamic environment allows for tailoring your therapeutic techniques to meet the specific needs of individuals dealing with issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and substance misuse.

Qualifications
  • Master's or Doctoral degree in Counseling, Psychology, or a related field is mandatory.
  • Active and unrestricted licensure as a Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Arizona.
  • A minimum of two years of counseling experience, particularly in a clinical context, is essential.
  • Specialized training or experience in family therapy, couples therapy, trauma-informed care, or substance misuse treatment is highly preferable.
  • A strong understanding of ethical and legal standards related to mental health practice is required.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a knack for establishing rapport with clients from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a healthcare team.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) software and relevant technology tools.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience working in outpatient settings.
  • Previous involvement with interdisciplinary teams in providing holistic patient care.
  • Background in training and mentoring less experienced staff members or interns.
Compensation and Benefits
  • The annual salary for this role is competitive, ranging from USD 90,000 to 110,000, based on experience and caseload management.
  • Flexible work schedules to promote a healthy work-life balance.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance plans.
  • Malpractice insurance coverage to ensure peace of mind while working.
  • Life insurance policies to protect you and your loved ones.
