What is a low voltage subcontractor?

Low voltage subcontractors are specialized contractors responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing low voltage systems such as security alarms, data cabling, audio/visual equipment, and telecommunications wiring. Unlike general electricians who handle high voltage electrical systems, low voltage subcontractors focus on systems operating at 50 volts or less. They often work on commercial, residential, and industrial projects, ensuring that network, communication, and security infrastructures are safely and efficiently set up according to code and project requirements.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a low voltage subcontractor?

To thrive as a Low Voltage Subcontractor, you need strong knowledge of electrical systems, blueprint reading, and installation techniques, often supported by relevant certifications or vocational training. Familiarity with industry-standard tools, cable testers, and systems like fire alarms, security, or data networks is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for collaborating with clients and contractors. These skills ensure safe, code-compliant installations and foster reliability and trust in project delivery.

What are common challenges faced by low voltage subcontractors on construction projects?

Low Voltage Subcontractors often encounter challenges such as coordinating installation schedules with other trades, adapting to last-minute design changes, and managing supply chain delays for specialized equipment. Effective communication with general contractors and other subcontractors is vital to avoid conflicts and ensure timely project delivery. Additionally, staying current with evolving technology standards and meeting strict safety and code compliance requirements are ongoing aspects of the role.

What is the difference between Low Voltage Subcontractor vs Electrician?

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Low-Voltage Project Estimator to join our growing team in Claremont, CA. In this role, you will lead the estimation process for diverse low-voltage systems—including nurse call systems, structured cabling, security, fire alarms, and audio-visual (AV) solutions. You will be responsible for sourcing RFPs, analyzing blueprints, conducting precise takeoffs, and crafting competitive bid packages in collaboration with internal teams and external vendors.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Bid Opportunity Sourcing: Monitor bid boards and industry aggregate sites to identify viable low-voltage projects aligned with our capabilities.
  • Blueprint & Document Analysis: Conduct thorough reviews of project specs, drawings, and scope documents to determine technical requirements.
  • Site Visits & Walkthroughs: Attend pre-bid job walks and site visits to evaluate existing field conditions, verify scope details, and identify potential installation challenges.
  • Quantity Takeoffs: Execute precise material, labor, and equipment takeoffs for complex low-voltage scopes.
  • Cost Estimating & Bid Preparation: Build detailed estimates covering labor, materials, equipment, and permits to build clear, competitive bid packages.
  • Vendor & Subcontractor Management: Solicit, negotiate, and analyze vendor and subcontractor quotes.
  • Value Engineering: Identify innovative cost-saving strategies and value-engineering opportunities while maintaining scope integrity and quality.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Sales, Engineering, and Project Management teams to refine estimates and ensure seamless handoffs.
  • Data Maintenance & Industry Insights: Maintain cost history records and internal databases while staying current on industry pricing, emerging technologies, and trends.

Qualifications:
Required:
  • Experience: Proven track record as an estimator in the low-voltage or commercial construction sector.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong domain knowledge across low voltage systems: nurse call, structured cabling, security, fire alarm, and commercial AV systems.
  • Software Skills: High proficiency in standard industry estimating software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Core Competencies: Analytical thinker with exceptional attention to detail, strong time-management skills, and effective communication capabilities.

Preferred:
  • Industry Certifications: BICSI (RCDD, DCDC, etc.) or AVIXA certifications are highly preferred.
  • Manufacturer Knowledge: Familiarity with major AV/control systems (e.g., Crestron, Q-SYS, AMX).
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent hands-on experience).

Physical & Environmental Requirements (ADA):
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment (computers, phones, copiers).
  • Ability to sit for extended periods (2+ hours at a time).
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to climb small footstools or ladders independently to review files or equipment.
  • Ability to travel independently between local sites or business locations as needed.

Compensation & Benefits:
  • Profitability Performance Sharing Plan: Eligible to participate in the ISN Profitability Performance Sharing Plan (PPSP).
  • Insurance: Medical and dental plans.
  • Time Off: Paid Time Off (PTO) plus recognized company holiday pay.
