Job description

The Georgia Office of the State Inspector General (OIG) Internship Program is a valuable learning experience for currently enrolled college and university junior, senior, or graduate students interested in a criminal justice or related career. The length of the internship is determined by the student's college or university, upon agreement with OIG. We endeavor to cooperate with the educational institution so that the student may receive academic credit for the work experience.

ELIGIBILITY

The program is open to full-time students currently classified as a junior or above interested in a criminal justice or related career who are currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited Georgia college or university.

Applicants must also meet the following criteria:

1.    U.S. citizen at least 18 years of age.
2.    In good academic standing with their college or university.
3.    3.0 GPA or higher.
4.    Excellent research, analysis, and written and verbal communication skills.
5.    Strong interest in government or public service as a career path.
6.    Must be recommended by their college or university to participate in the program.

SALARY & BENEFITS

OIG interns are currently paid at a rate of $15 per hour. The maximum work per week shall not exceed 29 hours. There are no benefits associated with this opportunity.

While there are no minimum required hours, OIG will endeavor to cooperate with the college or university to meet their requirements.

DISQUALIFICATION STANDARDS

OIG reviews a significant amount of information and considers the circumstances in many areas regarding a student's background. However, the following standards are among those that will automatically disqualify an applicant from employment.

1.    Intentionally falsifying, misrepresenting, or omitting pertinent information during any part of the employment process. This includes   deliberately making inaccurate, misleading, or fraudulent statements.
2.    Poor management of personal finances within the past five years. Debts, pending civil suits, garnishments, dispossessory warrants, bankruptcies, etc., will be investigated to determine an applicant's suitability for employment.
3.    Personal state or federal tax liability or delinquent student or government loans.
4.    Failure to meet child support obligations.
5.    Any felony conviction.
6.    Discovery of an applicant's involvement in any crime of a serious or aggravated nature. 
7.    Sufficient misdemeanor convictions to establish a pattern of disregard for the law.
8.    Any conviction or plea of nolo contendere within five years of the application date for Driving Under the Influence of Drugs or Alcohol (DUI) or for any serious traffic offense including but not limited to: Fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, vehicular homicide, failure to stop, render aid, or leave information, or racing.
9.    Deliberate association of a personal nature within the past three years with persons who have used illegal drugs in the presence of the applicant.
10.    Sale of illegal drugs or participating in drug trafficking in any manner, whether the applicant profits from their involvement or otherwise. 
11.    Use or possession of marijuana within three years of the application date.
12.    Use of an illegal drug or combination of illegal drugs (including anabolic steroids after February 27, 1991), other than marijuana within five years of the application date.
13.    Use of any prescription drug or legally obtainable substance in a manner for which it was not intended within three years of the application date.
14.    Tattoos/brand that depict or support criminal behavior, drug usage, nudity, profanity, promiscuity, subversive groups, bigotry, etc. Tattoos/brands on the neck, face, head, hands, and fingers that are visible while on duty.
15.    Previous disqualifications based on the findings of a background investigation within 12 months from the date of notification of disqualification.

LOCATION

OIG is located at 2 Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., Atlanta, Georgia, 30334. The intern will be expected to perform most if not all duty at this location.
 

Student enrolled in a Georgia high school, technical college, or university/college. Must be currently enrolled during the internship.
