Job description

The Logistics Operations Specialist plays a critical role in executing day-to-day logistics, transportation administration, railcar tracking, shipment coordination, fleet lease administration, and logistics reporting for the Feed Products and Logistics organization. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Betaine Sales and Logistics, this position provides essential support across all assigned products and company logistics activities without direct reports. The role focuses on ensuring efficient, compliant, and cost-effective movement of materials through proactive coordination, issue resolution, and detailed record-keeping.
Key responsibilities include coordinating shipment scheduling and transportation execution, monitoring and managing railcar status/repairs/utilization, securing competitive freight rates, handling domestic and international shipping documentation and customs coordination, reviewing freight invoices, managing demurrage and accessorial charges, administering fleet vehicle leases and records, and maintaining logistics SOPs, trackers, and performance dashboards. The ideal candidate brings strong competencies in shipment scheduling, rail tracking, freight invoice review, fleet administration, vendor coordination, data accuracy, and communication, with success measured by on-time performance, tracking accuracy, cost control, and reporting timeliness. A degree in a related field is preferred, though relevant experience in transportation, rail, fleet, inventory, or customer service can substitute.
Key responsibilities
  • Coordinate daily shipment scheduling and transportation execution across assigned product lines and locations.
  • Monitor railcar status, railcar availability, loaded and empty car movements, and rail service issues.
  • Manage rail shop schedules, assignments, repairs, and additional rail car issues
  • Manage and report on rail equipment utilization and turns.
  • Secure competitive freight rates and maintain a freight rate file for intercompany and customer freight bids/contracts.
  • Maintain transportation documentation, shipment records, carrier communications, and logistics reports.
  • Work with factory procurement on shipping and receiving of domestic and international shipments.
  • Work with Customs Broker on material imports.
  • Coordinate internal liquid movement scheduling in accordance with operations, inventory, customer service, and carrier requirements.
  • Track leased pallets, transportation assets, and assigned logistics equipment as applicable.
  • Review freight invoices, research discrepancies, support freight claims, and coordinate issue resolution with carriers and Finance.
  • Monitor demurrage, detention, rail delays, service failures, and accessorial charges; escalate recurring issues to the Senior Manager.
  • Administer fleet vehicle leases and fleet vendor communications.
  • Maintain fleet records, lease schedules, fuel card data, utilization reports, driver/vehicle documentation, and fleet cost reporting.
  • Support fleet policy administration, vehicle assignment records, and recurring communication with vehicle users and internal stakeholders.
  • Support procurement logistics, lime rock transportation support, NSM logistics interface, and contractor coordination as assigned.
  • Maintain logistics SOPs, scheduling tools, tracker files, and performance reporting dashboards.
  • Provide backup support for inventory reporting and contract/customer service processes according to the backup plan.
Decision authority
  • Make routine scheduling and carrier communication decisions within established guidelines.
  • Recommend corrective actions for recurring freight, rail, or fleet issues.
  • Escalate service failures, cost exceptions, contract deviations, and safety/compliance issues.
  • Maintain logistics and fleet records as official working records for the department.
Qualifications
An associate or bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred. Relevant experience in transportation, fleet administration, rail, inventory, or customer service may substitute for formal education.
