What Is Locum Tenens?

In the health care industry, a locum tenens is a temporary care provider that fills in when staff is out sick or when a facility has a staffing shortage. The phrase is a Latin term that means someone serves as a placeholder. Locum tenens nurse practitioners and physicians earn supplemental income outside of their primary jobs, choose flexible schedules, develop skills for a new or existing career, and travel on assignments. A locum tenens role is an opportunity for you to work for a health care organization short-term, so you can decide whether to accept a long-term job.

What are some common challenges faced by locum tenens physicians, and how can they be managed effectively?

Locum tenens physicians often face challenges such as adapting quickly to new clinical environments, learning different electronic health record (EHR) systems, and building rapport with new teams and patients in a short period of time. Effective communication, flexibility, and strong organizational skills are essential for managing these transitions. Many locum tenens professionals find that preparing ahead—such as reviewing hospital protocols and reaching out to on-site contacts before an assignment—can ease integration and ensure a smoother workflow.

What are locum tenens?

Locum tenens are physicians or healthcare professionals who temporarily fill in for other providers who are absent, on leave, or when there is a staffing shortage. These professionals work on a contract basis for a set period of time, often traveling to different locations based on demand. Locum tenens positions offer flexibility and can help ensure that patient care continues without interruption. This arrangement benefits both healthcare facilities needing coverage and providers seeking diverse clinical experiences.

What is the difference between Locum Tenens vs Permanent Physician?

AspectLocum TenensPermanent Physician

Locum Tenens physicians fill temporary staffing needs, offering flexibility and quick deployment, while permanent physicians commit to long-term employment, providing continuity of care. Both roles require similar credentials but differ mainly in duration and employment structure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Locum Tenens physician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Locum Tenens physician, you need a medical degree, active state licensure, board certification in your specialty, and strong clinical skills. Familiarity with various electronic health record (EHR) systems and credentialing processes is highly beneficial. Flexibility, adaptability, and strong interpersonal communication help you quickly integrate into new teams and environments. These skills ensure you can provide consistent, high-quality care while meeting the unique demands of temporary medical assignments.
