What is a locum tenens psychologist?

A locum tenens psychologist is a licensed psychologist who temporarily fills in for other psychologists at hospitals, clinics, or private practices. These professionals provide mental health services, such as therapy, assessment, and consultation, during periods when permanent staff are on leave, on sabbatical, or when there are staffing shortages. Locum tenens psychologists often travel to different locations and work on short-term assignments, which can range from a few weeks to several months. This role offers flexibility for the psychologist and helps healthcare facilities maintain consistent patient care.

What does a locum tenens psychologist do?

Locum tenens medical professionals work in different locations on an as-needed basis. Like a full-time psychologist, a locum tenens psychologist provides counseling services and mental health treatment to patients. Your duties can vary depending on the details of each temporary assignment. In most cases, you act as a fill-in psychologist and provide clinical services until the full-time mental health professional returns. You handle the caseload, make a mental health assessment of each new patient, and follow the existing plan for counseling or other treatment services for existing patients. Some locum tenens psychologists work in facilities that have a staffing shortage.

Excellent communication, adaptability, and cultural competence are crucial soft skills for building rapport with diverse clients and integrating quickly into new clinical environments. These competencies are essential to deliver high-quality care, ensure continuity for patients, and maintain professional standards across varying assignments.
