Job description

B2B Staffing Services, Inc. is seeking a travel nurse RN Med Surg for a travel nursing job in Wheeling, West Virginia.

MedSurg Unit Notes (Cost Center 6090)

Submission Requirements

  • 50-mile radius rule applies.
  • All submissions must include a copy of the candidate's unexpired driver's license.
  • Any licensing hits must be disclosed at the time of submission.

Unit Overview

  • Unit: Medical-Surgical
  • Cost Center: 6090
  • Beds: 52 private rooms

Required Certifications

  • Required: BLS, NIHSS
  • Preferred: ACLS

Staffing

RN Ratios

  • Days: 1:7 (typically)
  • Nights: 1:7 (typically)
  • Overall ratio ranges from 1:6–7

Charge Nurse

  • Charge nurse carries a full patient assignment.
  • Supported by a Clinical Assistant (CA) (40 hours/week):
    • Approximately half the time providing patient care.
    • Half the time performing administrative duties.

CNA Staffing

  • Typically 4–6 CNAs per shift.
  • CNA ratio: 1:10–12

Scheduling

Shift Times

  • Days: 6:45 AM – 7:15 PM
  • Nights: 6:45 PM – 7:15 AM

Weekend Requirement

Every other weekend (3 weekends within a 6-week schedule):

  • Days: Saturday & Sunday
  • Nights: Friday & Saturday

Holidays

  • Included in the holiday rotation.

Scheduling

  • Schedules are created in 6-week blocks.
  • Staff may request up to 6 days off per 6-week schedule.

EMR

  • Sunrise

Patient Monitoring

Telemetry

  • Remote telemetry as needed.
  • Monitored by another unit.
  • RNs are not required to interpret telemetry strips.
  • Telemetry interpretation experience is a plus.

Common Drips

  • Heparin
  • PCA with Morphine (MSO4)
  • Occasional Ativan infusion
  • Rare Lasix infusion (not continuous)

Not managed on this unit:

  • Cardiac drips
  • Insulin drips

Respiratory Support

  • BiPAP (intermittent)
  • CPAP
  • High-flow oxygen

Provider Coverage

  • Hospitalist: 24/7 in-house
  • Intensivist (ICU): 24/7 in-house
  • Residents: 24/7 in-house

Support Services

IV Team

  • Available 24/7
  • Dedicated PICC team available.
  • Unit RNs assess IV sites but do not start peripheral IVs.
  • All IV starts are completed by the IV Team.

Respiratory Therapy

  • Available 24/7

Pharmacy

  • Available 24/7
  • Pyxis medication dispensing system

Floating

May float to:

  • Other MedSurg units
  • MedSurg/Oncology
  • IMC (Medical-Surgical overflow only)

Travelers floating to IMC will not receive patients requiring continuous drips.

Orientation

  • General hospital orientation
  • Two full shifts on the unit

Common Patient Population

Post-operative patients:

  • Orthopedic surgeries
  • Basic neurosurgery (laminectomies, discectomies, spinal fusions)
  • Cholecystectomy
  • Mastectomy
  • Sleeve gastrectomy

Medical diagnoses:

  • COPD
  • Chest pain
  • Pneumonia
  • Cellulitis
  • Various infections
  • Other general medical conditions

Dialysis:

  • Hemodialysis patients are cared for on this unit.
  • Peritoneal dialysis experience is highly preferred for travelers.

Additional Notes

  • Patients being tested for COVID-19 generally remain on the unit while awaiting results.
  • If testing is expected to take an extended period, the patient will be transferred to the designated COVID unit.
  • Dress Code
    • RNs: Navy blue scrub top, navy blue scrub pants, navy scrub jacket (no hoodies).
    • CNAs: Gray scrubs.
