Description & Requirements
Bloomberg News is seeking an experienced reporter to cover the US aerospace and defense industry, with a primary focus on Boeing Co. The US manufacturer ranks among the most important companies in the field of global aviation and the job means covering what could become one of greatest comebacks in US corporate history. The successful candidate is expected to leverage and expand their source network to break news, interview executives and write impactful enterprise about the company and the wider sector. This role can be based out of our Seattle, NYC or Washington DC office.
Besides Boeing, the position involves covering some of the biggest US defense primes, including Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, as well as suppliers in the aviation industry. Another part of the assignment is to travel extensively to cover major air shows and other industry events, visit production sites and stay close to the companies and their executives in the portfolio.
A successful candidate would work in lockstep with the vibrant team of space, aviation and defense journalists to help tell the story of US and global aviation trends. The team is adept at the full range of the news cycle, from rapid breaking news to richly reported enterprise to multi-platform storytelling, delivered on diverse platforms that span the Bloomberg Terminal, newsletters and TV appearances. We'd expect the successful candidate to feel comfortable moving seamlessly between these different assignments.
Boeing's recovery from years of crisis remains work in progress, and the reporter covering the company would write comprehensively about that journey, from investment priorities to management reshuffles to commercial orders and next-generation innovation. The defense industry, meanwhile, is also undergoing a deep transformation under the Trump administration, from scaling munitions supplies to booming spending on AI and defense-tech to the militarization of space, which the successful candidate would equally help chronicle.
We'll trust you to:
-Develop sources and break market-moving news
-Have a knack for interpreting data and numbers and turning them into stories
-Come equipped with financial literacy and an understanding of Boeing's balance-sheet
-Write longer-form stories that are informative, investigative and a delight to read
-Coordinate and work collaboratively with other news teams and editors
-Think creatively about story formats, including video, data visualization and podcasts
You'll need to have:
-A track record in breaking news
-Multi-platform agility
-Experience in covering the aviation, defense and space industries
-The ability to write quickly and concisely under deadline pressure
-Knowledge of company news, including reading financial statements
