What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Lockheed pilot, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lockheed Pilot, you need advanced aeronautical knowledge, a commercial or military pilot license, and extensive flight hours in complex aircraft. Familiarity with Lockheed-specific avionics, flight management systems, and sometimes military-grade simulators or mission planning tools is typically required. Exceptional situational awareness, decision-making under pressure, and strong communication skills set top pilots apart. These competencies ensure the safe and effective operation of sophisticated aircraft in demanding environments, where precision and reliability are critical.

What are the typical challenges Lockheed pilots face when operating advanced military aircraft?

Lockheed pilots often encounter challenges such as adapting to rapidly evolving technology, managing complex avionics systems, and maintaining peak performance during high-stress missions. Additionally, they must stay current with frequent updates to tactical procedures and comply with rigorous safety protocols. Collaboration with ground crews, mission planners, and other pilots is essential for mission success, and pilots are expected to continually refine their skills through ongoing training and simulation exercises.

Job description

Aircraft Wiring Systems Lead
About Electra
At Electra, we're building the EL9 - a nine-passenger, hybrid-electric aircraft that takes off and lands in 150 feet. Our Ultra Short technology unlocks thousands of new operating locations and enables what we call Direct Aviation: quiet, point-to-point regional travel that gets people from where they are to where they want to go, without the congestion of major airports or the noise of conventional aviation.
A global company, headquartered in Manassas, VA, Electra is backed by Lockheed Martin, Honeywell, and Safran, has filed for FAA Part 23 type certification, and carries 2,000+ intent to purchase from operators worldwide. We're a team of ~100 people moving fast toward first EL9 test flights in 2027 and certification by late 2029 or 2030. Every hire matter at this stage - and this role is no exception.
The Role
Electra is seeking an Aircraft Wiring Systems Lead to lead the development, integration, and optimization of wiring systems on Electra's flagship nine-passenger EL9 aircraft. This role will be responsible for the aircraft wiring - including both low voltage and high voltage - ensuring reliable, certifiable, and high-performance operation across the full aircraft lifecycle.
What You'll Do
  • Lead the design of the aircraft's wiring systems, including harness design, routing, shielding, grounding, and installation.
  • Collaborate closely with airframe, avionics, flight controls, and propulsion teams to ensure wiring systems conform with design guide requirements.
  • Develop, support, and execute test plans for wiring systems, including validation, HIL setups, bench, and lab testing.
  • Evaluate and qualify suppliers, components, and subsystems, ensuring compliance standards and reliability requirements are met.
  • Generate and maintain system documentation including schematics, wiring diagrams, ICDs, and certification deliverables.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to junior engineers.
  • Contribute to process development and continuous improvement initiatives in electrical systems engineering.
  • Stay current with evolving hybrid-electric aircraft technologies, FAA regulations, safety, and certification standards.

What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in aerospace, mechanical, or electrical engineering or other related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in aircraft wiring systems design, integration, and certification.
  • Strong understanding of aircraft wiring systems design preferably in Part 23 or Part 25 programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to create system schematics, design wire harnesses and perform system integration.
  • Proficiency with CAD tools including Mentor Capital and Siemens NX.
  • Proficiency with industry standards including DO-254, DO-160, ARP4754A, ARP4761, or SAE AS50881.
  • Experience producing system-level documentation including design review presentations, analysis reports, test plans and reports, and certification deliverables.
  • Strong collaboration skills with cross-discipline teams and experience leading technical reviews.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Bonus Points
  • Experience leading the development of electrical systems for FAA Part 23 aircraft.
  • Hands-on experience with commercial certification processes (preferably FAA Part 23).
  • Experience with hybrid-electric propulsion or advanced electrical architectures.
  • Experience managing supplier development activities.
  • Experience with requirements management tools (e.g., JAMA) and/or system modeling tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink).
  • Private pilot license a plus.

Compensation
$130,000.00 - $160,000.00 annually. This range reflects the anticipated hiring range across all eligible locations; actual compensation is determined based on your relevant experience, skills, and geographic location. Total compensation includes performance bonus and comprehensive benefits.
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary and equity
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance; STD, LTD, and life insurance
  • Generous PTO, sick leave, and company holidays
  • Paid winter break
  • 401(k) with immediate vesting
  • Free catered lunches, coffee, snacks, and drinks at our Manassas headquarters
  • Free on-site parking

Compensation and Benefits
In addition to offering an exciting work environment and the opportunity to be part of the team making Ultra Short flight a reality, at Electra, we offer an unparalleled total rewards package. Electra offers employees a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, STD, LTD, and life insurance, generous PTO and sick leave, company holidays, paid winter break, and a 401(k) plan with immediate vesting. Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in a warehouse/aviation and office environment, which requires proper safety precautions. Work may require some physical effort in handling light materials, boxes, power tools, prototypes, and different materials or equipment. Due to the nature of our business and projects, some fieldwork may be required, working in both indoor and outdoor conditions. You may need to lift up to 50 lbs.
