Locations Assistant information

What is a locations assistant?

Locations Assistants are entry-level professionals who support the Locations Department on film and television productions. They help with scouting, setting up, and managing filming locations, ensuring the site is prepared and maintained during shoots. Their duties often include coordinating with property owners, handling logistics, assisting with crowd control, and making sure locations are returned to their original state after filming. This role requires excellent organizational and communication skills, as well as the ability to adapt quickly to changing environments.

What are the typical challenges faced by a locations assistant on set, and how can I prepare for them?

Locations Assistants often encounter challenges such as managing last-minute changes, coordinating with multiple departments, and ensuring locations remain clean and undisturbed during filming. You may be responsible for handling unexpected weather, dealing with local residents or authorities, and quickly resolving logistical issues. Preparing by developing strong communication, problem-solving skills, and flexibility will help you adapt to the fast-paced, unpredictable nature of the role. Familiarity with location permits and on-set protocols is also beneficial.

The Locations Assistant typically works in field or site-specific environments, focusing on logistical support at various locations. In contrast, the Office Coordinator manages administrative tasks within an office setting. While both roles require organizational skills, the Locations Assistant is more travel and site-focused, whereas the Office Coordinator handles day-to-day office operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a locations assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Locations Assistant, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a good understanding of location scouting processes, often supported by experience in film or television production. Familiarity with location management software, mapping tools, and a valid driver's license are typically required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and problem-solving abilities help you collaborate with diverse teams and handle on-set challenges. These skills are crucial for ensuring smooth logistics, maintaining positive relationships with property owners, and supporting efficient production operations.
