Job Overview
The Senior Director, Assortment Strategy holds a strategic leadership role, demonstrating exceptional financial business acumen, a strong understanding of Store strategy and tactics, project management experience, and the ability to lead large teams and POD partners through influence. A fundamental requirement for success is the ability to build trust with teams and key collaborators. In this leadership role, they collaborate directly with the SVP Assortment Planning and Allocation on coordinating cross-category Store Segment, Climate, and Location initiatives for both Private and Market Brands. Another key requirement is to demonstrate and act on curiosity to execute in a much broader and more complex business environment, transcending the traditional competitive landscape to more effectively attract and retain customers. They are also responsible for performing other duties as assigned.
Known as a trusted, collaborative, results-oriented leader, and business partner, The Senior Director, Assortment and Business Strategy leads through influence, possessing professional maturity and industry credibility. The ideal candidate is comfortable and effective in leading teams and change, with the ability to collaborate across functions to gain alignment that leads to flawless execution. They are tasked with creating and fostering a vision that supports being a market share leader in their category.
What You Will Do
  • Support and deliver on the strategic vision of the SVP, Assortment Planning & Allocation.
  • This colleague is responsible for leading, communicating and influencing category and enterprise-wide assortment initiatives, such as localization strategies across the newly formed Macy's Store Segmentations.
  • Will have direct accountability for Climate and Classification assortment strategies and distortions across all of our stores
  • Will lead, communicate and influence the deployment of end-to-end Planning process improvements
  • Identify innovative ways to disrupt the status quo and drive the business through constant curiosity and learning. Motivate appropriate risk-taking.
  • Collaborate with cross functional senior leadership teams, working closely with the SVP, Merch Execution, VPs National RMEs, and VP, Store Strategy, to ensure alignment with top line strategic and financial objectives
  • Serve as a critical partner to drive strategies and plans supporting a compelling core and curated assortment.
  • Possess a solid understanding and focus on our store fleet and size store growth opportunities, ensure initiatives differentiate Macy's, and edit for clarity.
  • Reduce complexity, act decisively, and model agility in leadership style.
  • Communicate with candor and value open debate to ensure the best ideas come to life.
  • Possess a growth-oriented mindset with the ability to coach teams to embrace growth.
  • Have the temperament to lead, motivate, and influence teams. Empower teams to remove obstacles.

  • Partner closely with Assortment Planning Senior Directors and DMMs to ensure coordination and alignment across our store strategies.
  • Collaborate closely with and act as the key contact to the Location Initiatives teams to drive store strategies and track requests to execute significant projects.
  • Align and communicate top Assortment priorities to stakeholders and cross-functional partners to maximize growth opportunities with flawless execution.
  • Identify the need for cross-divisional collaboration related to climate opportunities, competitives market share, style-outs, and Buying teams to minimize duplication and identify business opportunities.
  • Act as a project manager to lead/oversee Assortment & Allocation initiatives and special projects.
  • Ensure consistent execution of initiatives across FOB, sharing best practices when necessary.
  • Reduce complexity/redundancy by enhancing processes across Assortment Planning and Allocation in partnership with the Assortment Planning and Inventory Management Senior Directors.
  • Lead and mentor Assortment Directors as Appropriate
  • Foster an environment that promotes personal development and high morale for the entire team.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities

Who You Are
  • We encourage candidates with either a bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in a related field to apply.
  • 7 plus years of progressive experience in complex, best-in-class consumer and lifestyle-oriented companies that ideally create emotion connections with their customers. The broad scope of this role would benefit from an understanding of many functions including Buying, Digital, Planning, Private Brands, Stores, On-Line, and Marketing.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business publications, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations; write reports, business correspondence, and manuals; effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
