Job description

Join the MEPPI Team!
Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc. (MEPPI) is seeking a Senior Design Engineer for the Transportation System Division (TSD) to perform engineering and project management activities for design, development, application, manufacture, assembly, qualification test, installation, and servicing of existing and new electrical and electro-mechanical Transportation Systems Division (TSD) products. This role supports both onboard rail systems (installed on vehicles such as trains and locomotives) and wayside systems (infrastructure-based equipment along the rail network), ensuring seamless integration and performance across the transportation ecosystem.
This position will report to the TSD Engineering Department Manager and is an onsite role based in Freedom, PA.
What You'll Do:
  • Create, update, and maintain 3D models and 2D fabrication/production drawings. SolidWorks experience a plus.
  • Perform FEA simulations and stress/thermal calculations to validate design integrity of electro-mechanical and structural designs. Ansys experience a plus.
  • Support requirements management processes through analysis of customer requirements, derivation and allocation of lower-level requirements, prescribing V&V methods, establishing traceability, etc. Experience with DOORS a plus.
  • Capable of analyzing technical specifications to identify design constraints and technical risks.
  • Incorporate internal and operational requirements into designs to maximize manufacturability and maintainability.
  • Advanced knowledge of welding, brazing, and casting processes.
  • Develop and maintain bills of materials and design drawings. Lead Engineering Change and Configuration Management processes respective to assigned scope of work.
  • Perform product and equipment testing. Compile and analyze operational, test, and research data to establish performance standards for newly designed or modified equipment.
  • Lead and participate in customer and end-user meetings to discuss and resolve design related issues.
  • Lead root cause analysis evaluations of failures and defects.
  • Support field service work by providing information, analysis, and active troubleshooting of equipment both remotely and in person.
  • Create and maintain product manuals, training documents, technical presentations, etc.
  • Support localization initiatives through development, design, and/or specification of domestic components to replace imported components. Support supplier qualification as required.
  • Create and maintain purchasing specifications for externally sourced components or products.
  • Identify, research, and develop products to support new business opportunities.
  • Create proposals including budgets, schedules, and technical specifications.

What You'll Bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering with a minimum of 7 years' experience in a design engineering capacity with prior role as Lead Engineer, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of HVAC and/or Rail Propulsion System technology and design is a significant advantage.
  • Close collaboration with engineering and design drafting teams in the efficient execution of cross-functional design scope across multiple projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of normative/industry standards. Capable of translating standard requirements to design requirements.
  • Prior experience in serving as a mentor to junior to mid-level engineers with your team.
  • Advanced interpersonal, communication and presentation skills required to communicate with customers, international employees, and suppliers.
  • Advanced capability to read, understand, and create technical drawings and materials
  • Capability to function effectively across large multi-national organizations and across cultures.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced skill with 3D modeling/CAD software, FEA software, ERP/MRP systems, and Microsoft Office products.
