Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.
This position is represented by the Public Employees, Local 71, and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union.
DEPARTMENT: Parks & Recreation
HOURS OF WORK: Varies - 4 10's Monday through Sunday; 6:00 am - 4:30 pm
LOCATION: 1321 Lidia Selkregg Lane
Employees who are hired or rehired to any position shall be placed at the entrance pay step, and advancement from the entrance step to the maximum step within a pay grade shall be by successive steps.
To be considered for employment, applicants must be legally authorized to work and accept employment in the United States. The Municipality of Anchorage is not able to provide any type of sponsorship, including Student Visas and Employment Visas, under any circumstances.
Applicants shall be referred and considered for this position in the order as follows per the Collective Bargaining Agreement:
  • Internal applicants currently working under the Public Employees (Local 71) Collective Bargaining Agreement
  • Local union dispatched applicants
  • External applicants and other current Municipal employees not covered under this agreement

Example of Duties
The purpose of this position is to assist in the beautification of Anchorage parks and streetscapes and to maintain its natural resources. The gardener I position is the first level in the gardener classification series. This position generally performs routine gardening and landscaping under general supervision. The distinction between this level and other levels of gardener workers is based upon the level and complexity of duties performed and the degree of supervision received and exercised. This is a summer seasonal position that will be assigned to one or more zone areas to assist in flower bed preparation; in the maintenance, planting, irrigation of trees, shrubs, turf, flower beds and hanging flower baskets; the cleaning and sanitation of the parks; and in general landscaping and maintenance of parks, municipal facilities, and roadways.
Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences
At least 18 years of age with three (3) months of experience in greenhouse, horticulture, or landscape maintenance work, and use of associated equipment

Military Service Interview Preference

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows the full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual's command organization, and shows the name, signature, title, and contact information of the signer providing the statement of service.
