What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a local CDL driver?

To thrive as a Local CDL Driver, you need a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), a clean driving record, and knowledge of local routes and regulations. Familiarity with electronic logging devices (ELDs), GPS navigation systems, and basic vehicle maintenance tools is essential. Strong time management, customer service, and communication skills help drivers manage schedules and interact effectively with clients and dispatchers. These skills ensure timely, safe deliveries and foster reliability and professionalism in transportation operations.

What local jobs can I get with a commercial driver's license?

A commercial driver's license (CDL) enables you to work in various local driving jobs such as delivery driver, local truck driver, bus driver, or courier. These roles often require knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle operation, and safety protocols, and may involve schedules that are primarily within a specific geographic area.

What is the difference between Local CDL vs Long-Haul Truck Driver?

Search & Comparison IntentLocal CDL vs Long-Haul Truck Driver

Local CDL drivers typically operate within a specific area, returning home daily, while long-haul truck drivers travel longer distances, often staying away from home for days. Both roles require a CDL license, but their work environments and schedules differ significantly, catering to different preferences and career goals.

What is a local CDL?

Local CDL drivers are commercial truck drivers who hold a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and operate vehicles within a specific local area, usually returning home at the end of each shift. They typically transport goods between warehouses, businesses, or customer locations within a city or region. Unlike over-the-road (OTR) drivers, local CDL drivers usually have predictable schedules and shorter routes. This job often involves loading and unloading cargo, as well as adhering to safety and regulatory requirements.

What are typical work schedules and daily routes like for local CDL drivers?

Local CDL drivers usually operate within a specific geographic area, allowing them to return home at the end of each shift. Work schedules often include early mornings or late evenings, depending on the employer and the nature of the cargo. Daily routes are generally consistent, allowing drivers to become familiar with their delivery areas, local traffic patterns, and customer locations. This stability can help reduce stress and improve work-life balance compared to long-haul trucking. However, drivers should be prepared for occasional overtime or schedule changes due to delivery demands or traffic conditions.

How hard is it to get a local commercial driver's license (CDL) job?

Securing a local CDL job typically requires obtaining a valid commercial driver's license, which involves passing written and skills tests, and sometimes a background check. Having relevant driving experience, a clean driving record, and knowledge of safety regulations can improve job prospects, but competition varies by location and industry demand.

At Gallaher Signature Living, transportation is more than logistics—it is an extension of our hospitality, care, and commitment to resident dignity. This role partners closely with the Director of Experience & Lifestyle to ensure residents are transported safely, comfortably, and seamlessly to scheduled off-site activities, excursions, events, and appointments.

Reporting directly to the Director, this is a highly visible, resident-facing role requiring a strong sense of responsibility, discretion, and service. The ideal candidate brings a calm, reassuring presence, clear communication, and an unwavering commitment to safety, compliance, and elevated resident experience in accordance with California Title 22 regulations.

Salary: $20.00-$25.00

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and support a comprehensive whole-person Experience & Lifestyle program that promotes curiosity, connection, and purpose, enhancing quality of life across all levels of care.
  • Safely, efficiently, and responsibly operate all community vehicles and golf carts for resident transportation to scheduled outings, appointments, and events.
  • Assist residents with boarding and exiting vehicles, ensuring proper handling of personal belongings, mobility devices, and pets while maintaining resident dignity and comfort.
  • Provide attentive supervision and support to residents during transportation and off-site outings.
  • Immediately report any observed or suspected changes in a resident’s condition, incidents, or safety concerns to the Director of Experience & Lifestyle, in accordance with Title 22 reporting requirements.
  • Maintain constant awareness of resident safety, comfort, and well-being during all transportation activities.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor consistent with Gallaher Signature Living’s boutique hospitality standards.
  • Create a welcoming, calm, and reassuring environment for residents through courteous communication and attentive service.
  • Serve as a positive representative of the community during all outings and public interactions.
  • Adhere to all state and federal driving laws, community policies, and California Title 22 transportation and safety standards.
  • Perform required daily and weekly vehicle safety inspections, promptly reporting maintenance or safety concerns to the Director.
  • Ensure vehicles are clean, fueled, and prepared for scheduled use.
  • Maintain continuous communication with the community using assigned cell phone or radio, ensuring devices remain charged and operational.
  • Support regulatory readiness by following established transportation documentation and safety procedures.
  • Provide feedback and observations to leadership regarding opportunities to enhance transportation safety and resident experience.
  • Assist the Experience & Lifestyle team with programming logistics, including room setup, equipment handling, and post-event breakdown.
  • Provide coverage for Experience & Lifestyle Coordinators or Community Concierge as directed.
  • Assist with concierge services, light maintenance tasks, and resident deliveries (dry cleaning, packages, flyers, letters) assigned.
  • Attend all required meetings, training courses, and continuing education sessions to maintain compliance and service excellence.
  • Follow all California Title 22, RCFE licensing, safety, and transportation-related requirements as directed.
  • Maintain resident confidentiality, professional boundaries, and documentation standards in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
  • Participate in training related to transportation, resident safety, emergency procedures, and compliance expectations.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree preferred but not required.
  • High school diploma required.
  • Valid California Driver’s License. Certain positions may require a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger Endorsement and all qualifications necessary to operate commercial motor vehicles.
  • Employees with Commercial Driver Licenses assigned to DOT-regulated positions are subject to all applicable DOT and FMCSA drug and alcohol testing requirements, including pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing.
  • Employees assigned to non-DOT-regulated positions are subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Company policy and applicable law. This includes pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, and return-to-duty testing. To comply with California’s laws protecting off-duty cannabis use, the Company does not test for THC during pre-employment drug testing for non-DOT regulated positions.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, hands-on, service-driven environment.
  • Strong sense of responsibility, professionalism, and attention to detail.
  • Willingness to understand and support the social, emotional, and physical needs of an active adult population.
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Employees assigned to DOT-regulated positions must meet all FMCSA driver qualification requirements and maintain eligibility to operate commercial motor vehicles under applicable federal regulations.
  • Comply with all applicable federal, state, and company transportation regulations, including FMCSA regulations, California DMV requirements, CPUC requirements (where applicable), and Gallaher Signature Living transportation policies.
  • Cooperate with DOT, CHP, CPUC, DMV, and internal compliance audits or inspections.
